Mountain Biking - Bought a 2011 Kona Caldera

First post!

It's been a while since I've ridden a bicycle. Had a BMX during my pre-teen years. Then a 10-spd MTB throughout jr high and high school that was bought from K-mart. In 2003 (or 2004, can't remember), I bought a Specialized Hardrock but sold it after only 1-2 short rides. In 2007, bought a Kona Blast but ended up returning it (buyer remorse). Also had a cbr600rr but that's in a different class!

I've been thinking about going back to biking recreationally so after some research, I put a deposit down today for a brand new 2011 Kona Caldera (other choice was a 2012 Kona Blast...The store never brought in any 2012 Kona Caldera because of the excess quantity of the 2011 they got from Kona). Looking forward to picking it up sometime.

Anyways, in addition to looking at purchasing a mandatory bell, I need to get a lock. Did a google but the results are overwhelming. What's recommended and good out there?

FWIW, I've read that cable locks are easily cut by bolt-cutters. I believe that to be true. Once I tested some of the cable locks my company bought for laptops. Those I was able to cut using a pair of office scissors. Were I needing a lock, I'd go either U-Lock or a chain lock, like at the Kryptonine link above.

Welcome to a great sport for fun and exercise. Its a blast. Locks are never fool proof. What is posted above is as good as it gets. Short of getting lowjack for bikes, stay close to your bike as much as possible.

As far as a warning device, get something that can startle a dog. I am on a rash of having unleashed dogs deciding I am a threat to their owners. I have been able to keep the bike between myself and the dogs. but I am feeling the need for something more substantial.
