In the 1st RAAM, before it was called that, in 1982, the 4 guys who raced had 21 lb., 14 geared, custom tailored bikes that cost $2kUS, each.

There was still discomfort and it looked punishing, from the video.

What level of discomfort do you find yourself dealing with, and when do you throw in the towel?

You mean 4 guys and one lady! The lady didn't finish but she is an accomplished ultra-distance rider.

The biggest thing with distances like RAAM is that there are a ton of variables. One thing for sure is that any small annoyance on shorter distances can become ride ending painful on longer distances. You have to be preventative in your approach. An example is chamois cream. I don't use it normally but on long rides/races I will as a preventative measure. As far as DNFing goes, the only time I have DNF'd a race/event was because I started injured or sick.

I thought my good friend, Miss Kitty, was the 1st female entrant in 1983. Am I remembering something askew?
YMMV

1st RAAM or 1st "Great American Bike Race?" As I recall, the VERY first race had race organizer John Marino, Michael Shermer (who now heads the Skeptics Society in Pasadena and developed the neck problem named after him), John Howard (ex-US National Road Champion, who was also in the VERY first Ironman with two other guys: a swimmer and a runner), and I THINK Lon Haldeman, but I'n not sure. I don't think there were any women in that first GABR, but I stand to be corrected. I'm over 60 and my memory fades now & then...

Lon won.

And won again the next year.
