The scary thing is that most of these people then get behind the wheel of a car.

Nope. I haven't been to a DMV in a decade or more. I do all my stuff via the mail or else our local AAA office does it all, too. :)

And when I do have to go in to the AAA office, that means I never wait in line, either.

I was skeered.
One big guy had a mullet and a shirt with torn off sleeves. On the back it had a picture of a woman in a confederate flag bikini with big boobs. Said something about a big rack.

It's a cultural mecca at the DMV here.
The same outfits displayed in Walfart are used in this joint.As usual in Ohio,everyone passed the vision test with some being promted by the examiner.No insurance,no problem,lie and sign on the line that you are insured(no one asks for a card in this state).

The main reason for current crowds at the DMV is people seeking a state ID card due to loosing their driving permit to a DUI/DWI.Don't expect a cheery,refined bunch of critters after a big drunk roundup the previous week.This whole DUI thing is big business and very profitable for cities,attorneys,insurance,probation equiptment/breathalizers rental fees that are installed on the persons car.

The DMVs in my area offer appointments. You book online and when you get there they have an express lane where you don't wait more than about 5-10 minutes.

Here in MA, it's called the "Registry of Motor Vehicles", or RMV. Movie director David Lynch should hang out there for a bit. He'd get some great ideas for
characters for his movies.
