I picked up my new bike today and had them put some speedplays on. In the instructions it says to be sure and lube the cleat. I have no experience with this so if some one could tell me what needs to be lubed on them specifically, that would be great.

There should have been a set of instructions that came with the cleats along with a warranty registration card.

Basically, on the outer edge of the pedal you'll see a small Phillips Screw. Remove that screw and inject "a high quality WATERPROOF BEARING GREASE. Never use a liquid spray-type lubricant on Speedplay pedal bearings." (The quote is directly from the Speedplay instructions. Ask the LBS for them, if they didn't include them with your owner package.)

(Edited because jmlee caught my error in using the word "cleat" in stead of "pedal" Thanks. jm!)

In addition to lubing the bearings, I regularly lube the pedal surface and the springs. For this I use White Lightning, although I'm sure any other wax-based lube will do. For the pedal, I apply a very light coat to both surfaces. As for the cleats, I apply a few drops to the springs, on both sides of the cleat, so that the lube seaps into the cleat's spring area.

Hope this helps, and enjoy your new pedals, I certainly like mine.

Mike

Just to clarify, ljbike's instructions apply to the pedals, not to the cleats. Injecting grease into the pedals needs to be done something like every 3000-5000 miles.

As to the cleats, mikey suggests more or less what I have been doing. Some kind of "dry lube" very sparingly put onto the springs should do (I've been using Pedro's Extra Dry). I've had my Speedplays only a short time too, but my feeling is that the cleats should be inspected regularly. If they seem to lack some lube, then I put a drop on.

Enjoy your Speedplays. I am already a convert.

Cheers!
