Touring - Touring Bug Bit Me - Surly Disc Trucker

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I asked a question in the forum about turning an old Mountain Bike into a touring rig. Many have done it with great success. I went to a bike shop today to look at a Surly Disc trucker and I made the mistake of test riding it. What a nice ride. I was hooked! Got it home and started transferring some of the gear from my other bikes. I will upgrade the accessories as I go along. I am going to transfer my Shimano clip-less pedals from my old 1000c and then sell it. I got a suspension post in it and put my Brooks B-17 on there and it's like riding on air. (Well maybe not that good, but close) :thumb: I still need to move the computer from the 1000c to the Surly. I am going to get some Velo Orange Stainless Fenders for it and some panniers and plan a two day shake down ride.
Anyway, thanks for all the help in the other thread.

It looks a couple sizes too small based on all the seat post showing...
seeker333,
It's 58cm frame. It has the perfect stand-over height. What might be making it look that way to you is the suspension seat post. It goes down slightly when you sit on it. Yields a nice comfortable ride. :thumb:

I found the stock stem to be a bit long for my reach as I like to be more upright when touring.
I'm 5' 11" with a 32 inseam if that helps. I don't know what PBH is. :( All I know is this bike fits me and it's comfy for me!
Pelvic Bone Height, I believe.

I'm glad you're "comfy" on your new bike. That's the important thing. I was just curious as I kind of fall in between sizes with my LHT and wonder which direction other owners of similar statue have chosen to go.
The trucker is a great bike and I know you'll love it. :)
Thanks for that info!
I just went for a ride to the hardware store I had to pick up some zip ties for the bike computer (Which needs to be replaced - $8.00 Piece of junk off ebay - you get what you pay for I guess.) anyway, after 3 minor seat adjustments we got her dialed in and I was totally impressed with the comfort of this bike over the other bikes I have owned. I went through some loose gravel and grass and this is a great handling bike. Will take me a few trips to get used to the bar end shifters, but they are growing on me. Thanks again to those that pushed me in this direction. Nothing but a bunch of enablers on this forum. :roflmao2:

Nice looking bike! I just got my disc trucker frame, and will be building it up once my wheels arrive.
What seatpost do you have? Any thoughts?

What seatpost do you have? Any thoughts?I am using the one that came in my Trek 1000c but I also have a System EX Suspension seatpost for my Mountain Bike that I like a lot! I broke my tailbone playing Hockey a few years ago and this seatpost helps a lot. it takes the sting out of the unseen pot holes that we would rather not hit. ;)

After riding down to the LBS for a new Computer, I took the Long way home.........Down by Lake Michigan. Beautiful day for a ride.
