Are there any 1" cartridge bearing head sets still made???

Not the loose balls held in a ring, but that have the race with the balls. Replaceable races.

What were they Shimano STX?

There are lots of them out there. Chris King still makes them in threaded and threadless and is pruty colors. Armstong makes one. Sinz makes one. The Velo Orange Grand Cru sure looks like one.

Stronglight's latest version of their 1" A9 threaded headset now comes with cartridge bearings instead of the caged needle bearing they used to have. Most people think that the old, pioneering needle bearing design was much better, but the new one with the cartridge bearings I have on one of my bikes seems to be holding up OK so far. You can get them for around $40ish bucks from eBay sellers from mostly the UK. They are very light (between 80 - 90 grams complete) and still very well made, IMO.

Yes, the Velo Orange that you linked to is threaded.

The split crown can be seen in the lower picture on the left hand side. It's a crown that has a split or slot in it so that it doesn't have to be forced onto the fork. It just slips into place.

the stack height is from the top of the headtube to the top of the nut.

I have a stack height of only 20mm, must be needle bearings. May be I can cut it off and file it square enough.

The were also sold branded as Spidels, Gallis and even as "Bernard Hinault" specials. Everyone loved them back then and I'm sure that these other manufacturers were more than glad to put their labels on the A9s (for a fee).

I've got the same headset (HP-6500) installed on one bike and a second NIB one in my parts box. They were the screaming bargain of their day but I'm sure they are no longer made so NOS is the only way to find them.

Shimano pretty much got out of the headset business years ago when Dia Compe developed and patented the Aheadset threadless headset and the industry rapidly switched over to that design. Shimano wasn't willing to license the threadless technology and the market for their threaded headsets dwindled to the point it wasn't worth the bother.
