Hi guys,

I'm getting ready to try hosing out my jammed Dura Ace ST-7700 brifter with WD-40 in hopes of unjamming it but before I do that I have a question I was hoping someone could answer. When I pull on the brake lever and look inside theres a small flat ribbon cable in there that looks like it has torn in half or something. From what I gather its some kind of sensor cable but what exactly does it sense? Is it essential for the shifter to work or can it be removed? I doubt that its the cause of the jamming but if its damaged and not that important I may as well take it out right?

Just to be clear this is in reference the the right brifter. The left works fine and there is no ribbon cable inside that one.

Guessing you have the ST-7700-c version, this has a ribbon for the connection to the flightdeck, as seen in the tech docs http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/EV/bikecomponents/ST/EV-ST-7700-C-1905A_v1_m56577569830610605.pdf

Ahh so thats what flight deck means. Ok so it should be fine to remove the sensor cable then, I just wouldn't be able too hook up a flight deck computer. With the cable being damaged its not like I could do that anyway.

Flight Deck is a Shimano bike computer, which is integrated with their shifters, looks great, but they aren't cheap. This PDF should contain all the info you could need for it. http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/CycleComputer/SI_7AB0D/SI-7AB0D-Eng_v1_m56577569830686498.pdf

Thanks. I managed to remove the ribbon cable, at least most of it anyway, I think a little piece might be stuck inside the shifter but no way to tell for sure. I also just tried the WD-40/Tri-Flow flush but it didn't work for me. I guess the shifter is caput. :(
