Winter Cycling - Made me some snow tires!

Ok, instead of buying some nice tires, I decided to make my own. Total cost, $4.50 Cdn (screws) + 2 hrs of watching a crappy movie.

I know you guys like the streamers too ;)

Will that be enough Screws ? to get consistant Traction ?

How long of Screws are those ?

I remember making ice-racing tires for rally cars by installing hardened TEK screws FROM THE OUTSIDE IN. That's right. Opposite to what you did. Lasted one race.
Buy Nokians if you're serious.

I would try putting nuts on the screws once they're through to hold them in place. Anyhow, let us know how they hold up.

heh, glad you like the streamers, initially I thought they were ghey, but they've turned into a nice conversation piece on the trails lol. The screws are 1/2 inchers, but you may be right, I might have to add some more. I'll let you know after the first ride.

This is for a bike that's only going to be ridden on packed snow trails, maybe I should have stated that. As for the wood.......good question....i'm not sure (it's my in-laws garage), but I bet it's birch.

We are getting a massive dumping of snow tommorow so i'll try to get out before it snows and see how they hold up!

yeah, the ride i'm going on has a nice lake with lots of small rivers and ravines. should be fun.

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't it you who called me a "hoser"? I was actually going to ask you to lighten because if seeing pictures of someones tires drives you insult them then there could be something wrong. I just don't see the need for insults from educated/civilized people which I assume you are...... pops ;) .

Listen up, kid. Here in Europe, we Canadians refer to one another affectionately as "hosers". It's like a secret society that sets us apart and gives us a certain fellowship.

I am a Canadian and have lived here for 26 years (ON/BC/NS) and have never called or been called a hoser in a nice way. And I have never claimed worldy wisdom so i'm not sure why you are mentioning that.

Anyway, i've been to Europe many times (those flights are killer, but holy airmiles!) with team travel and no Canadians I met up with called each other hosers. So your society must be pretty small. The ones I met up with just say eh, out and about, touque and a few other things.

well, I went out for my ride. Riding at night is just so peaceful! Quiet, no car traffic, almost eerie. And the screws were great! I went on a frozen lake and and I felt like I was on rails. However, I didn't feel too confident on leaning the bike over too far, so maybe i'll need to add some more as per splat's suggestion. That's really going to double the 'ol budget :) .

Nice, Those studs won't last long! Then again its all about having some fun on the ice.

Thats some good info. I wonder how many people drown each year in a situation like this. I only anticipate these tires lasting me through one winter and.....oh my, a big winter storm is upon the city. As I started my morning net checks (daily news, tech stuff, etc) the sky was clear and now, 1/2 hr later, I can't see much out the windows.

So the storm is in full effect here on the east coast. I went out for a ride and it was a blast. I'm going to go out again after lunch.

This pic was taken at about 10am and by the time I got back (11:30 or so) I could barely see the houses behind me!!

PCS, what part of the east are you in?

That would be Halifax, I just moved here from BC. However I did live in Ontario (dundas/Hamilton) for my "formative" years :) I've been to port credit several times, we are pretty much one big continuous city now.
