According to the broadcast, the cyclist's condition has improved greatly. But no word on whether he will completely recover.
There was a picture of the van on the tv news. It was a GMC Safari mini van... hood was crumpled and the windshield looked like the cyclist head impacted on the driver's side. The woman took the van back to her boyfriend who demanded an explanation. After she admitted to him what she had done she left and the boyfriend called the cops.

That is horrible, what drives people to do things like this? I would love to know what this woman was doing where she was so blindsided where she couldn't spot a biker, and then hit him. What was worse is she left him to die!!! This woman is scum, and from her past with prostitution, she needs to be put in jail indeffinatly. I am curious of the motive of the driver, she must have obivously known that she hit him. Anyone else have any updates on this story?

I wish my views of my fellow humans on this planet wasn't so "jaded" by my observations over the years, but it seems like hurting someone and then disappearing is now more commonplace than doing the right thing. This view is not just from the number of times I've read items like this, but also from listening to numerous people throughout my life, many of whom I would now expect this behavior from.
I hope the cyclist gets better and can get back on the bike, and I hope they catch the woman, and she spends lots of time working on the county's prison farm doing backbreaking labor.
The guy's injuries are bleeding on the brain, punctured lung, and 3 spinal fractures. Critical, but stable condition.
The grille of the van was missing, big dent(s) in the hood, and a huge spider web glass shatter in the windshield above the steering wheel that would have obstructed her view of the road while she drove away from the scene.
So from the list of damages to the van, especially the spidar-like cracks on the windshield this does sound intentional, and not some kind of accident. I really hope this guy turns out alright, I've never heard of bleeding of the brain before, so I am not quite sure of what kind of problems it can lead to.
This isn't a very cycling friendly town, to be sure, but Chattanooga's getting better. I wish I could say this was the only case of it's kind, but some woman my Mother works with was victim of a hit and run(car on bicycle) last year, the police caught the perpatrator, but they're poor white trash who're never going to be able to pay for the medical bills they've incurred.
Everyone out there be careful.

Help me out with this one. How does the list of damages to the vehicle lead one to believe it was intentional?

Well, it must have been a head on crash because of the shatter on the windshield, she must have been driving right towards the cyclist. Something must have flown up on her windshield, maybe even the rider of the cyclist of a piece of his bike, so it's quite possible that it was a head on crash. With damages this severe, there is no possible way the driver could not have noticed she had hit something. With those said, she failed to even stop to see if he was alright, not like she cared. I am no detective or anything, but that is just my theory.
I don't assume it was intentional, but it was probably the result of intoxication/inattention. No less a crime, IMHO.
What is wrong with not allowing this woman to never drive again? Like doping penalties that are forever, permanant? I know most of the country "needs" cars to work and shop, but wouldn't that message tame the carelessness that is normal on our roads? I always groaned when cops would tell us in high school that driving was a privilige not a right, now I get it. Look what driving does to us? This country as a whole, drivers and non drivers all in the same mucky mess.
Nowadays the harsh pentaltys that reckless drivers recieve don't even stop them from driving...I don't quite remember the exact story but on Dateline or 60 Minutes they had an interview from this woman who is convicted of 13 drunk driving charges, yes 13. Her license has been revoked, but she still continues to drive. They went down a long list of people who had a incident or two and had their license taken away, but yet they still continued to drive.

by Mike Chambers
WDEF News
Feb 1, 2005 12:36 AM EST
The woman accused of last month's hit and run of a bicyclist made her first appearance in court...and she will remain in custody until her next appearance.
Karen Johnson appeared in Red Bank City court this morning on charges of hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to render aid.
Investigators say she drove the van that struck and severely injured an Atlanta man bicycling on Dayton Boulevard last month.
Johnson waived her preliminary hearing...it now goes to the grand jury.
Her bond remains at $125,000.
Johnson turned herself in several days after the accident.
Matthew Marion continues to undergo extensive therapy in Atlanta for spinal and brain injuries.
what did she have to say for herself?
I hope someone runs a tank over the car she's driving - with her in it.

Yep, and then leaves her there and drives off, see how she likes it...
