Mountain Biking - What are good cycling shoes?

I am new to finding good parts on the internet, I was wondering what a good brand of cycling shoe might be to start with because these will be my first clipless pedals.

There will be a ton of opinions with this question. I bought Shimano for clipless and they have served me well. I have 5.10s for pinned platforms. I like hiking around from time to time on rides. Platform shoes allow that where the cleat on clipless can be a hindrance at times.

Will you need to walk in the shoes? Do you prefer velcro straps, shoe laces, ratchets or some combination? What is your budget? If you plan to walk in the shoe, would you prefer a sneaker-type shoe, or a sandal?

I like velcro and ratchet straps and id like to spend less than 100, id prefer sneaker type to sandal. being able to walk with them in school would be nice but i dont need to. I have the basic plastic mallets so im using a clip. Thanks for the help. While we are talking, what might be a good durable mtb wheel for racing, ive been looking on the web and i cant find anything, i have wtb dual dutys now but id like disk brake. thanks again

Sette shoes from pricepoint are what I've been using for years, good price, and quality shoe.

Each of the three times I have tried on a bunch of cycling shoes I have most liked the cheapest Specialized shoes. It depends how your feet are shaped.

I personally love my Shimano shoes, not entirely sure of the model name but they're the ones with one ratchet at the top and two offset velcros. I'd recommend them, I can easily walk up loose terrain in them but I wouldn't fancy taking a leisure walk in them. But then again, I don't think anyone would want to in any SPD's/Clipless shoes.

5 10s for flats and specialized for clipless

I'm digging my Specialized Pro MTBs. I also have their Pro Roads as well. I used their Comp MTBs for many years but wanted a stiffer, lighter shoe with ratchet for my new pair. They fit my wider feet well w/o going to their x-wide ones.

I suggest going to your lbs and trying on several brands that fit your specs and price point. If you're going to be walking around in the shoes, you will want them to feel comfortable to you when you are walking. Some mountain bike shoes are easier to walk in than others. Your foot shape is important, too. For example, I have a pair of Shimanos that I use exclusively for spinning class. I purchased them because the back of the shoe was more low cut than other shoes I tried on. This means that I will have less friction against the back of my leg - less chance for abrasions or blisters. I recently went to a lbs that had a clearance sale on mountain bike shoes and a couple of the styles were even easier to walk in than my Shimanos.
