I've got a Control Tech 25.4" stoker stem and want to try some drop bars most of which are now available in 31.8. Anyone know of a source of the bar end only? Seems like a shame to buy a whole stem.

Looks like TandemsEast sells some. Not pictured, but their in a table near the bottom of their stems section. However, they're almost the same price as complete stems if I'm reading it correctly.

Try Alex at MTBTandems.com , he may not have the individual part but it's easy enough to find out.

Tandems East does, indeed, sell just the male extension, but as noted above not much savings! We're doing a trial fit on the trainer with a 31.8, obviously not clamped in place. The stoker's bars are far below my saddle so we'll have to see whether the backs of my legs at full extension; if that's not the case we'll be in good shape.

Or ask your local bike shop if they have some old 25.4 drop bars still hanging around.

The experiment failed before I even got it out in the field. My butt and thighs need the wide bullhorns; narrower drops bars would still put stoker's hands in the same place. When we're riding she has the impression of plenty of room between her hands and the aforementioned rear end, but on the trainer it's obvious we have a fat captain issue. I'm going to double-wrap the bars tonight to see if I can be her more comfortable. On the bright side the SMP saddle seems to be working out. We'll do a 50 miler Saturday which should be a good test.

I have no clue of your ultimate goal, but from the sound of it, a nice carbon MTB bar with bar ends should offer the width and more hand positions, with possibly better angles since the bar is not broomstick straight.
