I've gotten it into my head to pursue established and incrementally improving a PHR. I'm thinking along the lines of a 3 - 5 year commitment, with record attempts once or twice year. I'll be turning 50 in the next year, and I'm thinking about improving my PHR each year for those 3 - 5 years.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has done something similar (especially you TT gods), even if it's to say this is a bad idea.

Thanks.

The Hour is pretty much what you do for the year, or at least 6 month cycle. I've talked a bit with KK about his records and it's got to be the focus...but you end up with a lot of for to burn up afterwards.

Based on my TT times I could compete, but it's a hard ask.

My best is 30km. But I believe that I am stronger now, I'll have to test myself before snow here in Canada :thumb: But if you want to go as fast as you can, push until you feel like you're gonna puke, lay off the effort a bit to make sure you don't, and hold that speed. So basically push as hard as you can hold for one hour?

Yeah. I was thinking about training for my HR Nov-Mar, making the attempt(s) in early-mid April, then going back to road cycling May - Sep.

Not sure what you mean. ?

Yeah. By definition I will set my record the first time out, but the crux of this for me is the goal of besting my record each year. I need to have a clear-cut goal, and this is an appealing one for me.

Ya I have a route that's almost 60km right on, it's flat, with a few hills and I do the PHR sometimes. If you really want to see results, you could always ride very easily your first time, and then absolutely smash it the next!

I've found a provisional route that's 12.5 miles with an alt change of 110 feet over that distance. Perfect for an out-and-back.

Yup, the good ol' out and back. This can bring trouble sometimes.. I was on record earlier this year for a 50min 30kms, but when I turned around, there was a very very strong headwind. I went from 32+ km/h to strugling to hold 25km/h getting blown all around the road. I wanted to just get off my bike and walk the rest. Lol.

I know. But an OOB pretty much eleminates wind-assisted records. All the land speed records require 2 passes, 1 in each direction w/ an average of both speeds. Of course, I'll plan my attempts for days/times with little or no wind.

No, wind still has an impact. A straight crosswind in both directions slows you in both directions, which is different than headwind/tailwind, and much different than no wind. Also, there is the possibility of timing a storm front with a wind direction change and having a tailwind both ways. You'd have to run some models to figure out the differences, but I'm sure someone else has already run them if you're feeling lucky with Google.

Doing an hour record is an all or nothing thing, and you suffer like hell. Plus you give up the races in between for the most part. Big ask if you're like me and never saw a race you didn't want to do.

My best is 30km.

Something's off here. 30km is 18.6mph. That would be an hour of endurance miles.

Don't need more than two brain cells to know you are a very sad and bitter person, Botto. The only question is why? Think about it.

Well just on Monday I averaged 30 km/h or 18.6 mph for 72 km. I've never actually tested my PHR or even trained for it. I only have one road bike as well, so no TT stuff goin' on here. Although I do believe I'm faster now. It would suck if I wasn't!
