"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - List of amateur stage races in the usa (that doesnt involve multiple criteriums)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Starting to try to accumilate a list of stage races that go on in the USA that doesnt involve mainly crits and focuses more on road races and TTs. Looking to branch out next year and race in other places besides Florida. Bored with the every weekend 4 to 6 corner criterium racing. Though this list could be a place where others can find interesting stage races they otherwise arent aware of. Florida is just to crit heavy. looking to do less events that have more meaning and challenging.
come up with the following so far looking for others to chime in.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tour of the Gila www.tourofthegila.com

I'm not a stage racer but there are a couple around here that only the road racers like. The only one I can think of immediately is GMSR, Green Mountain Stage Race. There are some others but I'm not sure if they're stage races or road races.
You can always come up and do Battenkill too.

Race of the west was a excellent course! ocala was fun too. Gila is definitely on my list as well as everest challenge.

The Ft. Davis Hammerfest has no crits.
Isn't the Tour of the Dairylands mostly RRs as well?

Georgia Gran Prix is not a stage race, it's an omnium. Too many omniums in the SE, it sucks.

I think that ToAD is crit intense if I remember correctly.

Tour of Dairylands isn't a stage race, though, is it? I thought it was a series.

Both ToAD and what is left of Superweek are crit heavy series.

Ha yeah that's what I wanna know.
Here are a few more SR's:
* Merco Cycling Classic in Merced, CA: http://www.topsportcycling.com/events/merco-cycling-classic/
* San Dimas: http://sdsr.info/joomla/race-details (cat 2 only field)
* Sea Otter Classic: http://www.seaotterclassic.com/
* Tour of Walla Walla (in WA)
* Killington Stage Race (cat 2 only field)
* Hood: http://www.obra.mthoodcyclingclassic.com/
* Eugene Celebration
Of course just about all of these if not all of them have a crit in them. Does that count as 'crit heavy'? Still waiting for that crit-heavy SR.
I've never seen a crit heavy "stage race". Plenty of omniums of course. Really no purpose in such an animal I suppose.
The OP would be wise to also look into races throughout Latin America. Plenty of multi-day stage races with zero crits involved. Just gather up 6 guys and a support person, email the promoter and maybe you can secure a place. Your only cost will be plane tix. Most of those races cover lodging and offer up some food usually as well. And will get you a truck for the caravan to boot, sometimes with driver.

^the only stage race I actually enjoyed was the Tour de Michigan. For us Cat 3s it was eight 25 mile crits in 10 days. For the P12s it was eight 50 mile crits. I stopped going after I did it twice because they introduced mountain bike stages (yes, mtb).

Thanks for clarifying on ToAD.
And I guess I tend to lump stage races, omniums and series into one category.
From an amateur perspective, I just don't see the value in a promoter putting on a stage race over an omnium/series. If my understanding is correct, and please correct me if I am wrong, the difference is that a stage race requires a rider to start with the first event to continue and failing to complete any stage disqualifies you from the overall race, where as an omnium or series allows riders to do all or part of the event.
It seems like an omnium/series offers the opportunity for greater participation overall.

That's what the people in the Southeast have figured out. It's dumb though, a stage race is much more fun and a better environment being able to race with the same guys for multiple days. It sucks doing an omnium and getting just off the podium in a race just because the dude didn't do the two races the day before.
steamboat springs SR and Dead Dog SR in CO and WY are both 3 stage TT, RR, Crit races and they're both awesome.

stage races are by time.
Not really:
Stage races require a rider to finish one day to start the next. They may be run on points or time. (USAC 4A1)
In an omnium you can DNF one day and start the next. Some will also let you pick and choose which races you want to do. They are run on points. (USAC 1A19)
what are some points based stage races?

Mineral Wells SR, early season here in TX comes to mind. Crit (with a hill), TT (with 3 hills), road race (with a big hill). Points-based SR.

Edge City Stage Race, Texarkana TX, had RR, TT, RR. Time-based SR. It's mid-summer date is unfortunate but the courses make for good racing.

Tucson Bicycle Classic is a solid SW Stage Race.
And this past year, there was no crit at all: it was a short but hilly TT, a Road Race, and a Circuit Race.

Madera, CA.
Elkhorn, OR
Tour of the Bahamas
Little City NV (Reno)
Murrietta CA
Hopefully they'll resurrect Vegas.
Actually according to USAC a stage race doesn't have to be by time. It only requires that you complete all the stages vs. an omnium where you can ride one or all.
