i was given a new set of aero wheels, and would love to put them on my '87 nishiki 12 spd.. the wheels say theyre compatible with 9 and 10 speeds. will they work with the 12 sp cassette?

You can use the new wheels on your old bike if:
You Spread the rear dropouts a bit to get the wider wheel in the frame
You put on a 9 or 10 speed cassette, and a matching 9 or 10 speed chain
Readjust your derailleurs and assuming your shifters are set for friction, you should be good to go.

the bike is a bit of a frankenstein to start with, an the last time i said i couldnt do something, i went crazy til i proved myself wrong anyway. lol. im gonna do a lil research, an i'll let ya know how it worked out...

Personally I would put an 8 speed cassette on the freehub instead of a 9 or 10. Just will make it a little bit easier to shift using friction shifting.

im looking at the cassettes, and thinkin, they have more cogs than i already have. i don't need a lot of gears, cause its pretty flat out here. i need to understand how these things work... i just ordered a glenns manual from amazon, will that help? is there anywhere else i can reference these things?

You say its flat there? May be a good frame for a single speed/fixed gear conversion.

Post a picture of your wheels, especially the rear wheel and where the cogs go.

If the wheels say 9-10 compatible, they may be Campagnolo compatible hubs. If they say 8-9-10 they may be Shimano compatible hubs. How about posting a close up picture of the rear hub where the cassette goes.

Unless there has been a newer version I'm unfamiliar with the most recent version of Glenn's was published in 1988 and is badly out of date. It will apply to your bike as it was originally configured but will not cover any of the newer items you are considering. Get a copy of "Bicycling Magazines Complete Guide to Bicycle Maintenance and Repair" or Lennard Zinn's "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance". There are both far more contemporary.
