Welcome - tell us more about yourself, the sort of riding you do, what bikes you ride, what makes you tick etc. I will be in London for about 10 days in the beginning of March for my grand-daugthers 2nd birthday. I will be taking a load of presents so I dont know if I will be able to take a bike with me. I have used the Sustrans website to map a route across London from Heathrow to Mottingham, where my daughter lives.

An Oregon guy now, but I use to live in Wimbeldon. Not safe to cycle on the steets with your cabbies over there, good luck.

hello, I moved to london two years ago, and started riding here last week. I ride a falcon adventurer, that i find quite light, and that was important for me. I'm just starting to get used to ride on the other side of the rode (I come from europe). But I'm finding it quite enjoyable, much much better than bus or tube. Any tips for biginners like me?

Beleive me London is way the safest place to cylce. I work out in Wales and Cambridge so every day cycle through london to a train tain to wales or cambridge then either over the hills to caerphilly or through cambridge and up the A14 to barhill. They are insane out of london and the speed difference is so great. To be honest most of the time they just don't see you and I am covered in lights and reflectors. Give me London any day. Agressive but on the ball, except the buses which are now totally dreadful.

PS used to live in San Fran. Brill cycling very respectful cars but the only place I have been driven at on purpose. Lived there two years and this happend three times. The last time I had to jump off the road over the armco and down a bank. The guy hit the armco then yelled at me and drove off.

Beleive me London is a picnic compared to that.

Key to riding in London is to make sure the people in the car have seen you. Lots of eye contact and never ride up the inside of a bus or Lorry unless you want to get squished, they just can't see you.

Also there is nothing wrong with bailing out. IE getting of your bike and walking or crossing the road, doesn;t really slow you down that much.

I've only been a tourist in England and Wales, but I found both experiences quite enjoyable. There is nothing like the empty country lanes, where the only obstacles have four hooves. London was exciting, and full of respectful motorists, but not too different from any other big city.
