I'm looking to buy my first mountain bike and have decided that I want a hardtail 29er. The problem is that I'm a complete beginner with virtually no knowledge of what's good and what I should run away from. I would like to stay in the $600 range. What's worth taking a look at?

I would start at your LBS and talk to the guys about brands they carry and the options at your price range. Nice to establish a relationship for the future and know the bike is properly set up and safe. If your looking for the best bang for your buck then used from craigslist or some of the different internet sites. This may be possible if you have buddies that can wrench and help you out with what your buying. Alot of good reviews of these http://www.airbornebicycles.com/products/110-airborne-guardian-29er.aspx on MTBR site in your $ range. Take your time, do your research, and enjoy the ride.

pretty much every major bike company makes a 29er at that $600-700 price point. They all seem to be similarly equipped too. It comes down to which color you like best.
