Commuting - What do you use to keep your pants from being eaten by your chain rings?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
What do you use to keep your pants from being eaten by your chain rings? I use this on a '95 XT drivetrain. I found it last year NOS at an LBS. It screws into the threads where the bolt that attaches the crank to the BB is. It works. I was quite surprised it even existed. What else is out there?

I tuck my pant legs into my socks

I pinch off a little bit, fold it back against my ankle and roll them over my calves which hold them in place. Sort of like knickers or old baseball pants.
I use a reflective band to hold my pants against my leg.

Roll up left leg. Very cheap, very effective.

My Raleigh C40 hybrid came with something like this, and I have ridden with all kinds of pants including some quite baggy ones. without ever making special preparations. Not once have my pants ever been caught in the gears.

I tend to forget about dealing with my pants legs, so I wear man-capris now. A.K.A. " Man-pris ". I taper them, shorten them, and add 3m Scotchlite reflective cuffs. Nerd points thru the roof, as well.

Socks
I wear rain pants when it's really windy or raining/snowing. What do you sockers do? Don't you get soaked? BTW the chainguard cost only $4, well worth it, I think.

I tuck my pants into my socks and/or use velcro reflective bands. Would like the tapered cycling pants but can't justify the cost... the sock-tucking thing works... I'm not trying to impress anyone :)

Roll it up, besides the helmet, it's real biker fashion.
The right leg works for me though, what side is you chainring on Krispist? (wink!)

Good point. But I probably would not be wearing rain pants. ( I generaly don't start a ride when I know it will rain. I have however been caught in the rain. )

Ditto, though I wear the bands on both legs. Impossible to have too many reflective bits!

ditto, RobCat. I have even considered using more than one pair of reflective velcro straps, but they impair circulation or movement if there are more of them.

This does the same, more a bash/ rock mounting ring when designed.
The bikes original 46T Shimano chainring re-cycled.

The reflective velcro straps I use are called Jogalite.

roll up my right pant leg to below knee
Use to use rubber bands. Moved onto some velcro bands I made up. Finally went old school when I came across these.

wear shorts in the summer, and sweat pants or lycra bike pants in the winter. Nuff said.

Doesn't always work that way, so I use reflective straps....

The thing in the blue Terry box is spring steel you just push it on, it's fast on/off.
Pants Protectors. Super convenient.
The reflective pants protectors are probably more comfortable, they don't have to squeeze you leg so hard. Plus it's reflective.
You guys are going to kill me. I had a great pair of Timberland boots I just bought, just mounted my Power Grips, tucked in my laces, and went for a ride. One of my laces came out and caught the chainring the first chance it had! Broke it!
I've had this bike since 1989. I couldn't remember the last time I used the large chainring (you know where this is going). I took the chainring off and ground all the teeth off. Took a file and smoothed it out. Took sandpaper and finished it off. It actually looks great. I haven't gotten my pants greasy or broken a lace since.
I suppose I could have bought a chain guard. I already had the chainring. I did get some theraputic relief with the grinder!

yea or you can just a get a bash guard. on cheap mountain bikes, they have this cheap plastic wannabe bash guards. just take it off one of those and attach it to your bike.

Reflective velcro bands or the sock trick in the Winter, but Spring, Summer & early Fall I'm wearing shorts.

you can also just blouse your pants
I have a few pairs of pants I ride in that I don't care if they get trashed and greased. In fact, I kinda like that they get thrased and greased. Until I get my perma-chainring mark tattooed on my leg this summer, it's all I have in the winter to show that I'm a bit more of a harda** than everyone else.

Cool idea for a tattoo. Post a pic when you get it done...

I roll up my right pant leg because I'm an original gangster. I'm straight outta the projects. No one gonna steal my bike fur shizzel with my leg rolled up.
Reflective velcro band. I use them when I run, too. For the reflectiveness. Not because I run in pants. Because I don't. THAT would be dorky.

I just wear shorts. And yes, it DOES always work that way.
Or when I wear jeans I'll just roll the legs up.

In the winter, I wear a pair of Burley rain pants which zip at the bottom with a reflective velcro strip as well. these keep my pants clean as a whistle AND safe from the hungry chain. In the warmer months, I use my socks. low tech and you usually don't lose them (unlike the velcro bands which I simply can't keep track of.)

I found this nice elastic pantleg strap with battery powered reflector and connector (like a chinstrap). It works great. I use it every day.

IchbinJay,
My girlfriend laughed when she saw me walking around with one pantleg up. I always ride my bike in the weekends so it makes sense just to leave it rolled up.
I've been thinking- East Coast rappers 'reprazent' with their right pant leg rolled up. Whats the deal? I did a bit of research and found a paper that said drug dealers roll up the left pantleg as a 'discreet sign'. Huh?

I wear 3/4 baggies or roll the right leg up if I have to wear jeans.

The one leg rolled up is to signify the availability of drugs. I think that the right leg up means 'I have drugs'.

Or perhaps right leg up means "I'm on drugs".
