NBC news is reporting - Johnny Carson has died, the age of 79, from emphysema.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Johnny Carson, the Tonight Show TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79.

"Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service." (Related: Audio appreciation)

Sotzing would not give further details, including the time of death or the location.

The boyish-looking Nebraska native with the disarming grin, who survived every attempt to topple him from his late-night talk show throne, was a star who managed never to distance himself from his audience.

Johnny Carson was a class act.
I missed him when he went off the air.
I'll REALLY miss him now that he's off the Earth.

RIP, dude....

Johnny was one of the greats. He'll be missed.

Heeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!

One of my fondest memories is that of watching my grandfather laugh at the Carson show. He has been gone since the mid eighties. I am not all that old but it there is a lot of nostalgia in remembering back to that time when there were only 3 channles on the TV. (rural america)


It is just a further sign of the passing of the good ol days.

This is sad. He was truly one of the good guys.

I kept hoping that he'd make a guest appearance on any show at some point, just so we could all check in and re-connnect. Sadly, it never happened.

Rest in peace Johnny.

I was hoping he'd take the job back from Leno. I think Carson was writing for Letterman.

A lot of "comics" get their laughs by making fun of other people. Johnny Carson's funniest stuff often had himself as the subject of the joke...his "psychic" who could not correctly guess "heads or tails" if he had three guesses...his used car saleman located at the "Slossen Cut-off"...his bony impersonation of Tarzan...

There was a real healing involved in ending a hard day with a bit of his gentle humor, and not the mean-spirited, foul mouthed stuff spewing out of the cable channels today.

Nicely put! He was already missed, now moreso.

The good ol' days weren't always that good, but Johnny was really good. To me his class and style were never outdone by anyone.

Carson was awesome. He made the jokes that flopped funnier than the good ones through his interaction with the crowd, the sign of a gifted performer. My only problem with Leno is not his talent(he is very talented) or his "raciness",(he's not particularly "dirty" and I don't mind that kind of comedy anyway.) I just think that he inherited a show AND an audience from Carson, and, in trying to update the show, he has added more edgy humor than I think is appropriate. I like Chappelle's Show, but I wouldn't try to turn "Hee Haw" into it.

I see "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" and the "tonight Show with Jay Leno" as two completely different shows. I could easily watch both on any given night. I miss Johnny, and for the time being seldom miss Leno.

True. I watched both his final episode in 1992, and then the next episode with Leno; they were both very different. Many traditional accessories of Carson were gone, even the band. But that's okay in my book; Tonight Show had to take on some of Leno's personality in order for it to continue, otherwise it would seem like a farce. Axel Merckx isn't Eddy, but he knows it and gives 100% anyway.
