Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Anyone else cut their own hair?
I've finally realized I can do just as good of a job myself as the usual barber. I'll save about $200 a year. Got my clippers at the pawnshop and thinking of getting a Rolls-Royce set, so recommendations on that welcome.

I do a buzz cut several times a year, though if I'm doing an interview, I go to a professional. I bought a Norelco set, and later a Remington detail trimmer for nose and ears.
I got my 2nd Flowbee last year, its better than the robocut

My wife cuts mine. $9-$20/mo at the barber or $20 for a Wahl that's lasted us for four years now? Hmm.
Which reminds me, it's finally time for a new blade.

My wife cuts mine and I just have her use the clippers at 3/4" all over, then trim up. It is awfully tough to do a decent job of trimming solo.
If you're thinking about doing your own haircuts, I strongly suggest investing in a decent set of clippers - the cheap consumer ones are crap. I have a nice Oster I bought ten years ago that is still going strong.

Not as much lately.

I use Andis clippers. I've had the same one for 12 years. They sell the parts everywhere.
Wife cuts mine with a Wahl set we've had for several years, saves several hundred a year.

I used to, but it made my wife mad and thats not worth $20.

And many Andis & Oster blades are interchangeable.
I used the Oster A5 (http://www.amazon.com/Oster-2-Speed-Professional-Animal-Clipper/dp/B000LRN31A) (for dogs) on myself. Now I look like a labradoodle.
Wahl clipper with 1/8" guide. Take the guide off to trim moustache, beard and around the ears.

Several hundred a year? Maybe if you get your hair did at the metro salon.
Go to a regular men's barber. Mine charges $9 for a cut. I get my hair cut about every 5 to 6 weeks. I've cut my own, but it's just not worth it.
Twice a month @ Great Clips or similar. $12 + tip, call it $30/month. Adds up quickly.

Twice a month? I get my hair cut once every three months.

yeah, weird, I had long hair for -30+ years, and when I cut it finally, I've kept it @ 5/8" and feel strange if it gets longer, OCD of sorts I suppose.

Yep, I don't cut my hair but have had Bouviers for 25 years and have done a lot of grooming. Oster A5 over Andis any day. Hair salons have them for a reason.

Does anyone not get a cut with scissors here?
lol
I got my "Ronson" clippers at the pawn shop for $40 and have used them personally for about 5 years. Seems like they need to be sharpened now. Does anyone know about getting them sharpened? Do you have to remove the blades?

Go into the Shaver Shop for a Wahul Baldfader. I had a cheap one before and the Wahul was like seeing for the first time, the Rolls of clippers and you don't need the combs.

Seems like no one here has experienced the scissor over comb cut. You don't need a buzzer to get close, just some good shears.
On another note, sometimes it looks like I cut my own hair or got drunk at a party and got owned. I kind of don't care about my hair that much that I let my friend from Sassoon give me weird, crazy hair cuts.
Get a Whals and check the box to be sure it's made in the USA. No Chinese junk!

I buzzed it a few times a year, but now don't bother cutting it at all :thumb: When i stopped going to the barber though i felt a little guilty since he was a cool dude...

Mine's made in the USA. I've had it around 5 years used it 2 or 3 times a week and still has the original blades and still clips my hair almost as good as shaving my head. It's a good product.

I did in college. One time I did a trim, and it turned out badly. Everyone at work was praising me except one electronics tech who told me that I looked like I had gotten run over by a lawnmower. We were friends from then on, because I knew I could trust him to tell the truth.
Now I prefer a buzz cut. It's simple, hard to goof up.

I trim my hair all the time, not a full cut though.

I've cut my own hair for a while now. Used to use a pair of oster beard trimmers that I used on my beard for a number of years, but the guard broke after using it on my hair a couple of times. My wife got me a norelco set with attachments for beard, hair, and everything else (not as nice as the oster, but did the job) but eventually the hair guard broke. I've been thinking about gluing it back together or buying a new one, but I might just go back to getting it done professionally once every couple of months instead. More than the money, I hate the awkwardness of sitting in such close proximity to a stranger for a while and being expected to have a conversation. I used to go to a beauty school a couple of times a year to get it done when I was in college because a) it was dirt cheap b) they weren't allowed to accept tips (and I have never had a good feel for how much to leave and have never been smooth about leaving it - either they don't see and I'm afraid they think I shorted them or I make too big a show of it) and c) they did the whole rubbing scented oils into my head/scalp, neck and shoulder massage. But going there you knew you were stuck talking to a stranger with whom you had nothing in common for an hour and that finally drove me to starting to do it myself.

Is it that eccentric? I just grab ponytail, reach back and snip across.
I paid 20 bucks six years ago for a Kambrook one from Australian Kmart. It's been a faithful servant, and the kit came with combs, apron, scissors, the works. I use the No 1 comb on the clippers for the buzz cut. I just make sure to keep the clippers oiled.
I am a bit vexed at the moment. My hair is long and my clippers are on the other side of the world. I may have to shave my head (which wouldn't be a first time, but I swore the first would be the last). I haven't sited a barber here in France yet...

Yep -- cut my own hair when I was 4. Had to live with that for 3 weeks. After that, I let professionals do it (except for the time I let my girlfriend shave my head for for high school football).

I didn't say that. Just I haven't si(gh)ted one yet. Been distracted by other things like ice cream and topless woman at the beach.

Thanks I'll check it out - how come you don't need the combs? How can I do 2 on the sides and 4 on top?

Comb's come with it I just go for the bald look, it's easier than shaving and cuts darn near as close.
