I have been looking at the Trek 7500FX, Specialized Sirrus and other road ready hybrids. My LBS will sell me a Schwinn Super Sport GS at a very good price. No one on this site makes much mention of Schwinn so it makes me wonder if there may be reasons not to seriously consider it. The spec's appear to look good on paper. Is Schwinn a has-been manufacturer?

yes, but who cares. unless you plan on racing or doing hardcore stuff with it, it'll be fine and it'll serve you well. assuming it fits you, and you feel comfortable and all that jazz.

Very few lbs sell Schwinns anymore. I can think of one store in Denver that I bet still sells them, but I thought they were only sold at x-marts anymore.

The fact that the bike is a Schwinn isn't nearly as important as the fact that you are considering a Schwinn for sale in a bike shop. If it's a reputable shop, buying the Schwinn there means that you'll have it properly assembled, fitted, and maintained.

Depending on price, I'd buy it. It's a Alu frame bike made on Bike Island using OK quality parts. There's no real difference between brand names at this level. On sale I think the Super Sport GS should be worth $400 or less time of year (that's the '04 model)
