Touring - Passport pictures, in post- film era?

the digital cameras market killed camera shops, that may have offered the option
to have your photograph taken, with in the rather detailed requirements
of a picture print to meet the State Department's specific format..

My current Passport is no longer valid. only store closed 4 years ago.

any solutions?

post office will take your picture, but you need to make an appointment. Walmart too. I'm sure if you look up passport photos for your local area you will find alternatives to that

Just looked it up for my area. UPS store, Kinkos, CVS, Walgreens, some local photo shop.

Walmart does passport photos. That's where I've had my last two passport photos done.

Sears will do passport photos, they know the rules.

To get a passport, you have to appear in person at your local passport issuing office, frequently located in a post office. They will take your picture.

Walgreens, AAA Club, Walmart, CVS and I am sure there are many others. I had mine done at AAA the last time around.

Tons of places still do it. Photos still need to be printed. If a store prints photos there is a good chance they take passport photos.

If memory serves me, even with digital photography, they still print them out and that is what you submit to the passport office.

Try a UPS Store or similar. The one near work does passport photos and even has a notary.

The post office I went to for a passport warned me that they cost a couple dollars more than Walgreens, I went ahead and paid a slightly higher fee to post office. Only some post offices offer passports and they may have limited hours, call first.

I take my own pictures for passports with a digital camera and print it on photo paper, photos from digital cameras are allowed. The only comment that I got from the post office was that the background was not white enough but they took it anyways..

Your local FedEx/Kinko's store may still do them.

The drug store did mine in about 10 minutes.

around here, any large drugstore chain place has a photo section and does it.
fast, easy and all the dimensions of prints, head size within print etc is all figured out, so easier to do it than doing it yourself and having it refused if one parameter is not adhered to. (especially if you need a passport within a certain period, not worth messing around with any mistakes)

This coming from someone who worked in commercial photography and at times had to painstakenly make actual b+w prints for the rare client for passport photos, using an enlarger and such when joe-blow business guy would call to ask for a passport shot from a corpo shoot we did. It was a pita, and back then, most quick places used a special polaroid camera that quadrupled the headshot taken with it onto a 4x5 pola, which would then be cut into four passport shots.

Not so. My most recent passport renewal was done online. There is a U.S. State Dept. webpage (https://pptform.state.gov/) for that. I hung up a white sheet. I stood in front of it and had my wife take my picture. Cropped it so that it fit the required size and so that my head and shoulders filled the required silhouette. I sent the image in digitally along with the completed application and required payment (I think by credit card) and I was good to go. I also purchased a passport card at the same time. It fits in my wallet and is what I use on my tours to Canada so I can leave the passport behind.

There are guidelines for this as to head size as a proportion of the picture ,lighting , and a white background. Much easier now with digital than polaroid,which is what we used back in the day , when there still were photo labs .

Make sure the photo presents the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin
Center the head with the frame
The person in the photo should have a neutral expression and be facing the camera

The height of the head (top of hair to bottom of chin) should measure 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches (25 mm - 35 mm)
Make sure the eye height is between 1 1/8 inches to 1 3/8 inches (28 mm – 35 mm) from the bottom of the photo

I'm in awe that this is a bike forums question, and that there's 10 consecutive answers :D

I never let anyone take mine!;-) I just eyeball the distance so that the subject covers the middle third of a frame and use a white or plain wall as background. Then get regular 4 x 6" prints (or is it 3 x 5?) and then cut out the pics. If unsure, take 2-3 shots at different distance and get all printed (in duplicate or as many as needed) One of the sets will fit the bill. Even with multiple sets, it comes out cheaper than having someone else do it, if you don't count your time. I have done this for passport and visas pics.
