Mountain - Plains - Age Old Question

I was riding on one of the new bike trails in town on Sunday. Wasn't really paying much attention when I heard some clicking, like toe nails, looked over and here comes two dogs after me. They had come across a 3 lane street. I immediately stopped. One dog, a pitbull, started to come near me and was barking and snarling, the other dog, a mastif circled around behind me. I kind of swung the bike back and forth. After some more barking, they both walked back across the street.

My question is, was I right to stop? I've had dogs come at me by themselves, but not in a pair. I'm really not sure what the right course of action is for dogs. I'm just glad that they weren't more interested in getting a piece of me. I will definitely go get some HALT this week.

I was always raised with the knowledge that if they are following behind you or coming directly at you (from behind) then keep riding, but if they (as my dad would say) have a bead on you and are on an intercept course, where they'll run into you in 10 feet or whatever, that's when you stop. Hope that makes sense, I'll can try and explain more if it doesn't.

Yes, that does make sense. I was surprised by them and probably should have just kept up my pace. I've been past that same spot several times and haven't seen them again. Maybe the traffic took care of that problem:thumb:

Also, if a dog does come out and your forced to stop, be sure to call the police when you get back home. Usually if it happened to you, it happens to others, and if the dog attacks the cop then you will never have to worry about it again (again, story from my dad, hasn't happened to me yet)!

I should have done that. There was a family walking towards me about 2 blocks away. They had two small kids and a small dog with them. I stopped and warned them about the two dogs. I'm sure the dogs wouldn't be thrown off by a couple of adults.
The house the dogs came from had no fence at the time and I'm sure the police would have had a nice talk with the owner.
Glad it hasn't happened to you yet, it scared the c**p out of me....
