Foo - O'Hare Airport

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Probably a lot of people have seen this or know the history and this probably is a repost, but it is interesting regardless. I have been to O'Hare numerous times, but have never known the history.

A great story. I actually remember that story from a book I read on the carrier Yorktown when I was 12 or 13 (Rendezvous at Midway). The action described was part of the Battle of the Coral Sea, in which an attempted invasion of New Guinea by the Japanese was turned back by the American navy. This was the first naval battle in history in which the ships from opposing sides never saw each other. All the action was fought in the air by men like Butch O'Hare. Sadly O'Hare's ship, the Lexington, was sunk and from a pure numbers standpoint the battle was indecisive. Had the fleet not been there, however, the invasion may well have succeeded and the Japanese would have been in a position to threaten Australia and New Zealand.
