Touring - Moving to upstate New York

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Im moving to upstate New York in a couple days,Canandaigua to be exact.Just wondering if anyone on this forum is from that part of new york .I have bicycled around that area in the past but never any loaded touring.Id like to do a 200 mile ride with a couple of over nights but dont know what direction to go in,i'd also like to stealth camp if possible.
I'm in Rochester... A Finger Lakes loop and the Erie Canal are good places to start. We are also on the Adventure Cycling Association's Northern Tier so you could take that in either direction. There is some free camping along the Erie Canal and I believe there are more wild camping opportunities east of Rochester along the canal but I am not sure exactly where this begins. See link below. Also, search on Crazyguyonabike for tour journals of the Finger Lakes and the Erie Canal to get more info.

For day riding you can't do much better than Canandaigua. For $20 you can join the Rochester Bicycling club and they will give you a CD of nearly 400 day rides. These guys should be a wealth of information for touring in the area.

Also from Rochester here. You'll love cycling in the area, as you can do anything from the dead-flat ride of the Erie Canal to some of the very substantial hills around the Finger Lakes ( and both in one day, if you like that sort of thing :-) )
Googling "Finger lakes bicycle routes" brings up a bunch of options, along with for example http://bikenewengland.com/finger_lakes.html, which you could easily adapt to an unsupported, stealth camping tour.
