Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Crank clicking

Bought an EighthInch awhile back and noticed now that I am riding the crank has a click/noise emitting from it every time I pedal. Of course I had a friend that is a dealer for them build it, and I don't like other people touching my bikes because it usually ends up in misery. I believe it is the crank because there is no noise when I coast, is it time to tear down the crank and see whats what? Do people rock the Scramblers and have some insight into pitfalls also.

This could be a lot of things (like telling a mechanic you hear a ticking in your motor) but what I would check first is the bottom bracket. Sometimes when they get worn out they creak or click on each pedal rotation. It doesn't happen when you're "coasting" because you're not putting enough pressure on the cranks. Also, make sure your crank arms are torqued properly. If that doesn't do it start looking at pedals. Sometimes their bearings can go bad and make noises under load.

One last thing - I don't know if your bike has them but I have heard tons of people with Sram Omnium cranksets complain of a mysterious clicking.

Check chainring bolts

Sounds like you have a loose chainring bolt, if the female side of the bolt spins when you tighten it, it is not tight enough and will make the clime you describe

If no clicking sound when coasting, also check your freewheel.

And your shoelaces.

Edit: To be helpful though, chainring bolts (as scrod mentioned), lube your chain, check your laces, then head to the bottom bracket and other wild potential sources of clicking.

I'm having a similar problem on my new bike.

It only happens certain times when I pedal. Every once in a while there will be no sound. I went slower to see if it was the pressure causing it but it didn't matter if I was going hard or soft. It also changes where it click in rotation of the crank if I coast for a bit and then start pedaling again.

I've checked my chain ring bolts, and I don't know if I should go into the BB. I'm pretty new to bike stuff. I might have to visit my LBS.

Easy to test your bottom bracket. Put the pedals vertical. Get off your bike, stand to the side of it, and jump up and down on one of the pedals. That would be enough pressure to replicate a creaky bottom bracket almost 100%.

Also, your chain might make an occasional click or strange noise, especially when it is new or too tight.

Again, sounds like the freewheel.

check your chainring bolts
check your bottom bracket.
check your moms liquor cabinet

Yes. I had a similar issue, flipped to fixed because I was annoyed by it and never went back. :D

Get a White Industries freewheel. If the freewheel isn't the problem, then the loud buzz of the White freewheel should drown out any other sound.

Are we talking about, when coasting? Cause that sounds normal to me, it's when I'm pedaling.

When coasting a freewheel will make the normal ratcheting sound. However, a bad freewheel will have a click or clunk noise when pedaling. It's quite annoying. Most lower grade freewheels are throw away parts when they go bad. Do you know what make your's is? You can spend about $100 and get a White Industries and have one damn good freewheel, or you can spend about $20 and still get a decent freewheel.

Couldn't really read it. Looked like PEH RANT.... something or other it's covered by the spokes. Came stock on my Fuji.

I hear that when the freewheel start making clunking noise when pedaling then you can soak it in some degreaser for about 30min and then clean it and soak it in a heavy type oil to relube the freewheel up. I don't know if this will work as I have never try it. My freewheel was making a lot of clunking noise when pedaling so I just swap in a new freewheel and that solved the problem.

You just need to fill up the crank fluid. No big.

When I ride, I too hear clicks. I figure I'll keep going until something breaks, then I'll know what it was for the next time. This is what I hear when I pedal and coast...doesn't matter....too afraid to turn around.

Check seatpost/seat rails. Ride bike, take feet off pedals and pretend to pedal...

Honestly for me, last time I heard that. I noticed every few rotations, click, click, click...I cleaned the chain and a stupid rock or something I could not see while riding was in there,actually is a lot of "grit". After taking abrush to it, no more noise. I ride through some construction sites so crap flipped its way in there.
