I just picked up a lightly used Vail Cycle Works road frame made for Columbus Nivacrom Steel. It is in the mail to me as I type. I don’t know much about this frame builder. Does anyone know about this frame builder and the quality of his work?

I am considering building it up with a mostly 105 build with comfort and distance as my objective. I am thinking all 105 except for the hubs, bottom bracket and rear derailleur. I am thinking about upgrading these components to Ultegra. Any help and/or info would be appreciated.

I will Peter Chisholm this one by saying: I'd recommend all Campagnolo; AC-H BB, Veloce or Centaur Cranks, Mirage ergos levers, and Mirage or Veloce for FD, RD, cassette, brakes. I had this kind of setup on a Bianchi San Remo and loved it. You could even do all that with Shimano cog spacing with no trouble at all. Think about it.

What's Petey Chisholm got to do with anything other than he pedals Campy and seems to hate shimano. I have 105/ultegra,and it works fine. Now maybe that it's 1:1 the thread can proceed without all the campy/shimano barnyard waste.

I love that saying “barnyard waste”. Actually tvphobic has a good point. I was actually considering Campy but I am leaning against because of cost. However, if the frame is in mint condition when it arrives and the geometry is “right-on” (I know it will be close) I may just splurge.

Only that people will ask which Shimano group to go with, he will then just ask that they consider his favorite brand.

I have a 105/Ultegra bike too. I like it. I can feel the STI getting ready to die though. Not so with my Centaur ergos. I sold the Mirage-ergo-bike because I realized my touring plans were unrealistic, so I never put more than 450 miles on it, but it was sweet.
