I've been researching Chinese carbon rims lately, and they don't look half bad from the reviews I've been reading. If you get them from the right place, they're supposed to be decent. My question is, does anyone have an answer, or at least some input, the the thread title-question? I was thinking of possibly riding a rear 90mm Chinese, and either a front Ellipse, or a front 60mm Chinese carbon. I'd mostly be riding on a paved bike path, and an outdoor track (if it was indoor I'd probably go with a front 90mm).
I've been looking at Chinese rims for a long time. If you're looking at clincher, which from you looking at the mavics I assume you are, then give them a miss. They're only rated to max 120psi for any of the ones I've seen. Just find a set of alu rims like the mavics or wait until you want tubulars. Then you can seriously consider Chinese rims IMO. If you do go for them, get decent hubs, not the cheap soft hubs some companies offer. Gear changes chew out their threads apparently.
Only reason that I'm going for clinchers is that I train on a bike path, and I get flats pretty often.
I've only looked at clinchers because we get a lot of broken glass on our club track at times. It's a place the underage drinkers like to go and hang out and they love smashing their bottles. The lack of a higher pressure tolerance on the carbon clinchers is what finally put me off them. Go Alu for the clinchers and save the carbon for the tubs. Running a set of Conti SuSos at 140psi could be the death of carbon clinchers and then you're substantially out of pocket.
