Foo - I'm thinking of buying a van.

Gonna live down by the river?
Get one of those vintage ones with the little bubble window in the back and a Wizard airbrushed on the side. Cool.
U R so awsum!

Skip the van and get a Honda element. They're pretty neat.

In all seriousness, we owned a Voyager for some time and really enjoyed the ergomonics. The motor, trans, brakes...not so much, but it was a joy to drive when it wasn't in the shop.

CD? It has to be an 8 track to be period.

I'm right here. Sitting at in front of the laptop, randomly selecting letters from the keyboard.

We didn't have a disco ball but we did have one of those 70s conversion vans. Do you know what happens in the back when you're intoxicated father decides to go off road? Chaos!

The Toyota vans look awesome. Chrysler town and country are also great. Lots of room with the stow and go seating and they drive like a luxury car.

I have to laugh a bit at that one. Hell, you weren't driving at the time if you didn't have a cold beer, or mixed drink in your hand while driving. I recall my dad's van had a bar in it, as well as those cool buoy drink holders on the swivel (like in boats) so you could drive off in the ditch without spilling a drop.

If I buy a van, it will likely be a Toyota cause they are better than American cars.

For a laugh, google "Piaggio Ape 50 Van"
Rural Italy is awash with the open tray version of these farty little things - if you're brave you can beat them going down twisty mountain roads. They usually put up a good fight though.

1990's VW Vanagon Synchro, Mitsubishi Van, or any of the old Toyota Vans up to and including the Previa. Go for it.

Got me a '99 Plymouth Voyager with 121,000 miles. Slow as frozen 4 cylinder poop. Handling is spooky. Transmission howls. I love it. Picked it up for $1,300. No more pickups for me. I am a van guy. It can haul just about anything a truck can. I carry my three big hounds around in comfort. It will get replaced with another van when it's no longer economically feasible.
Sadly, my wife has vowed never again on the minivan (2 GM and 3 Mopar).
Couch, if you don't need the passenger capacity, check out the Ford Transit Connect Wagon (http://www.ford.com/trucks/transitconnect/).

My buddy bought a Transit. It broke his heart. The concept is great, but his ate brakes and had to have the CV shafts replaced at 14,000. Something small was always breaking. If they'd extend it by a foot or so and do something about the reliability, I'd consider one.

you might look at the Honda FIT... while not a mini-van, the rear seats are really adjustable - they flip up to fit taller objects in, and fold flat for longer things. My 6'4" son fits nicely in it, too. I have filled mine with a bathroom vanity & 80 gal water heater one time, or the more usual... a couple of bikes & associated gear & riders. My '08 sport gets 35 -37 mpg, handles great,.... and it's... cuter than a minvan!

This is the perfect van for hauling all your garbage.

It is a former fleet van for Milton Hershey school. It runs like a top. The only problem is that they took out all the seats to haul more garbage. In fact, it hauls more garbage than a red VW Microbus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice%27s_Restaurant).

If you need to haul a lot of people and/or gear, not much does it better than a minivan. Honda Element is very small inside, gets crap case mileage for what is it, and since it's out of production now the used prices are on the high side.
Have owned a Honda Odyssey since 2000 - just replaced it a couple months ago with a 2010 model. We're constantly carrying something with us somewhere - kayaks, bikes, skis and snowboards. You can slide 4x8 sheet goods into the back with the rear seat down and the mid seat out.
Really, unless you want to get a Suburban there's nothing that can carry as much volume. We take a two week camping trip every year, and here's a rundown of what does into an on the van: four kayaks and two bikes on top (78" wide bars), then in the back two more bikes, tent, sleeping bags, pads, clothing for four people, paddles and pfd's, cook stove, cook kit, two totes of food and miscellaneous, cooler, bike helmets, lantern...you get the idea. And four people of course.
If you are careful, you can fit four adult size bikes in the back (with the middle row seats in). I've slid a couple whitewater kayaks in the old one - short play boats.
Haven't driven other vans, but Odysseys are nice to drive generally -- pretty car like, reasonable power, and (without gear on the roof) they get pretty good highway mileage -- around 27 mpg real life.

What type of terror would one find in that sort of haunted house?

My suggestion, based on fixing cars for a living for the past several years, is to get a honda odyssey.

Honda thinks their cars are made of gold.
Go for the long warranty and get a Kia or Hyundai van.

Check out a rusty Sprinter w/maybe 200,000 miles on it and an inline 5 Diesel.
You can bunny hop a bike right into it and sleep in the saddle if you're so inclined.
26 mpg city or highway, and would be good for another 300,000 miles. Build a bunk and store your entire fleet of bikes inside while you sleep. Or, store a sub-compact car inside.

Who cares about a POS with a warranty when you can get a used Honda which will tend to go north of 200,000 miles with considerably less maintenance and trouble than almost any other vehicle?

I'm a believer. And this pic of the family fleet was taken just outside of Detroit!
