Bicycle Mechanics - stripped axle/nut threads

I just got an old 3-speed for some parts but cannot remove the front wheel. The threads on one of the front axle/nut are stripped. The nut will turn but it won't move along the axle so the the front wheel cannot come off the fork. I tried to pry that tang washer off the fork but there is not enough room for it to come off.

Other than taking an hacksaw to cut the axle, are there other better methods? The axle/nut are no good anyway.

Sometimes, you can get the nut to pick up good thread and back off by prying it back gently as you turn it. If that fails it might be easier to use a Dremel, hacksaw or file to cut the tab from the washer so the wheel can drop free.

There are also little tools called nut crackers (http://www.glasswarepro.com/key/frozen-bolt-nut-cracker) (not the ones for walnuts) made specifically to split frozen nuts off bolts. These aren't that cheap, but most auto mechanics, especially those who work on mufflers, have them. If you have an auto mechanic friend, he can probably bail you out of this jam.
