Advocacy & Safety - Finally found a situation where drivers LIKE cyclists breaking the law.

I swear it is true.

Of course there is a reason.

Near work there is a road that goes over the freeway, just as it starts to rise there is an onramp where you branch to the right, not turn, it is about a 20 degree angle. Just before that is a light. To the left is an onramp and offramp, the reason for the light. To the right the street goes about 20 feet and there is a fair sized dirt parking area.

Drivers actaully like cyclists running that light.

Why? becaseu it allows the cyclist to get past teh split before the light changes. If they are past that the cars do not ahve to contend with the cyclists.

They may like to have the cyclists run the light, but I'm sure that won't stop them from using that as an example of how "bad" cyclists are.

Probably true for some drivers. I really have having a cyclist in front of me there.

NOT becaseu i'm inpatient or the like, but becaseu I've seen too many drivers try to cut over from the left lane to make that ramp. So if I behave like a decent person I may well have a ringside seat to a disaster. That is still the choice I make.

I don't think it is usually bad, but when work lets out it is a different story.

a place where bicyclists routinely and confidently RLJ? that sounds like the perfect place for a police "sting" against bicyclist RLJers. and then the police can report to the media that however-many bicyclists were ticketed in a two hour sting "to promote road safety for bicyclists" (of course), and they're doing they're job to enforce road safety, but bicyclists need to be more careful and wear helmets, blah-blah-blah.

a better solution would be working to get a "slip lane" installed for bicycles. that would make the manoeuvre legal.

Considering the general area it is a bit of a surprise thsi hasn't happened. Not for the press, but for revenue. The Sheriffs patrol the area and do a lot of thigns for revenue, some very stupid.

It is not a super high bike traffic area, anyone going past the spot is either almost home or is looking at a fair sized hill. Not much by Century rider standards, but a lot for the typical urban cyclist. That hill cuts down numbers and filters out the inexperienced.

They complain about cyclists running stop signs, but I don't, and they get cranky that I don't because then THEY have to stop when they're behind me, and THEY sure don't want to stop.

I am 50/50 on the point the OP is making.

Because, On the one hand, motorists' hate it when cyclists' ignore stop signs n' traffic lights. At the same time, motorists' want cyclists' out of the way, so it only makes sense to blow through them.

I am not advocating doing that. But motorists' can't have it both ways.
