A local is selling a set of Phils laced to VO PBP rims 36 hole for $280, should I jump on this offer? I've only heard good things about Phil Wood hubs, but I need some more advice from riders who actually have ridden the track hubs from Phil, so, any useful advice?

Phil hubs are great for bling factor but not much "better" than anything else out there with decent sealed bearings.

That is a good deal when considering the cost of the hubs and rims separately though.

Yeah that's I was thinking, great deal, but for the price I could custom build something more to my liking.

couple things: i do believe phil hubs are the best out there in terms of durability and serviceability. if you were taking your bike cross country, or plan to ride a billion miles on them, these wheels are probably a good deal.

that said, phil hubs are pretty heavy. those PBP rims are also pretty heavy, and 36 spoke wheels tend to be heavy, you made no mention of the spokes, but cheap straight gauge spokes are really heavy - see the theme?

this wheelset is likely to be totally bombproof but extremely heavy. depending on what you want in a wheel, these may or may not be what you're looking for.

+1. Phil hubs look nice, but don't offer any other major advantages over cheaper hubs. You can custom build a wheelset for that price that will be better tuned to your weight and riding style. Unless, bomb proof wheels is your goal....in that case go for it, as long as the wheels are in good condition and built properly. Make sure the tension is tight and even..otherwise stay away.
