i just got my new wheelset built up- i'll post pics when i can borrow a camera. i have a couple of questions. first of all, what can i expect as far as breaking in a new wheelset goes? i never had a brand new fixie wheelset before, my other two were used.
part 2- when i put my new wheels on (changed from suzue hubs to iro), i noticed some tightness on the drivetrain side rear dropout. in fact, i had to tap the wheel (lightly) to get it into place. once the axle passed the mouth of the dropout, it was fine, and can easily be moved fore and aft. the other side was fine. i can't see a visible difference between the two sides. is this something i should worry about, or is it just a part of having a used track frame from the 80s? thanks all.

you shouldn't have to do too much with breaking in new wheels if they were hand built but most of the time with machine built wheels the first time you stand on them you will hear creaks and pops when the spokes are seating in the rim, and in that case you might just have to re-true them. as far as the dropout it sounds as was bent a tad at the mouth.. i wouldn't worry to much about it.these things happen with old frames

Machine built wheels should always be retensioned, stress relieved, and trued if you want a strong wheel that doesn't continually go out of true.

thanks for the feedback...just got back from the test ride, and all i can say is the only thing more fun than riding brakeless is riding brakeless on ice and snow.

test ride...u crazy! I can barely walk out of my apartment, those bastards piled the snow sky high.

good luck w/ the new wheels btw. did you get the hubs off the site or at a store? I can't seem to find them in the few I checked out around here.

i got iro hubs and mavic wheels, from sheldon and ebay, respectively. go to trackstar on 1st and 1st if you want a shop though. i did have to wade through knee deep snow to get to the street, but after a month and a half of not riding and scrimping to get the cash for these new wheels, i couldn't help myself.
