General Cycling Discussion - Are Panaracer tires low quality tires??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Are Panaracers cheap stuff? I don't have much experience with the company's tires.

Quite the opposite. They range from good to excellent tires. Their commuter/ touring tires are great.

FWIW, Panaracer = Panasonic

My all-time favorite tire for all-around use, in 40 years of cycling, is probably Panaracer's Pasela TG. it's light, tough and rolls well. The ordinary Pasela (non-TG) is the same tire without a Kevlar belt, a little cheaper.

Maybe Dugast hand made sew up tires will be more excellent, instead, than you need.
panaracers are more than adequate.

Panaracer tires are top quality. I used Panaracer Pasela Tourguard exclusively on my commuter bike. Started with 700x32. When they wore out I switched to 700x28 for more speed. Averaged maybe one flat per year commuting to work on Atlanta's crappy roads.

Probably the worst marketed & distributed full line of bicycle tires availalbe in the US. Perhaps that's why they are so affordable. Other than the Paselas, I've never seen an LBS carry the brand.

I use Panaracer Ribmo's (similar to armadillos, gatorskins, etc). They roll well and wear evenly.

Panaracer Stradius are my favorite $20 road tires. Luckily at least two of my LBSs carry them.

I think Panaracer makes the best tires. The Pasela is a beautiful artifact, but not too common around here.

I love 'em -- what on Earth led you to think they might be "low-quality"??

probably because a lot of stores don't sale them for some reason. Conti. , Vittoria, and Michelin are the most I see.

Western Bike Works has 13 models, Universal has 46 (only 18 in-store, though), BikeTiresDirect has 14.

Seems like almost every shop in Portland carries the Paselas.

I really want to try the paselas TG but I don't want the gum walls. :(

Because all three of mine got splits around the whole gumwall with less than 500 miles on them.

I've had the same experience with sidewall cracking on both Pasela TG and Ribmos. In fact, after the Paselas began to crack (within ~4 months of new) I contacted Panaracer. They assured me the cracks were cosmetic but still sent a set of Ribmos for my trouble. Within the same amount of time the Ribmos cracked as well. I'm still riding both sets, though.

I dunno... some bike stores have no trouble carrying CST/Kenda tires. Would that they used the space for better stuff!

Kind of disingenuous to leave this out of the opening post. ("I don't have much experience with the company's tires.")

For what it's worth, I've put quite a few thousand miles on Paselas with no trouble, save for a sidewall gash that would have occurred with any tire (caught the edge of some broken pavement). If you're talking about the bead-protecting layer of fabric separating from the sidewall, that is indeed normal. I'll take a picture of mine tomorrow.

Panaracer makes great tires, and for a really good price, IMO. Nice variety, and very good looking (if that sort of thing matters to you.)

Three Panaracers had the tread separate for large (>12") runs around the circumference on me. I'd had good luck with them for 6-8 years before that. I ascribe it to a bad batch, but I've got some Michelins and Continentals to wear out while waiting for the wholesale/retail chain to clear that batch out before I buy any more.

I don't have much experience with them. I have only had them for 2 months. First time using this company's tires. I know nothing about them but what I saw on the Rivbike.com site.

As promised, here's a pic of the bead-protecting layer of fabric separating (benignly) from the sidewall. Is this what your tires did?

I'm not sure what mine is doing. All I know is I sent a picture like this to Panaracer and a customer service rep said it was cosmetic but they still sent me a set of Ribmos for my "trouble". :)

Yep, that's the same thing. You could peel off that whole layer (carefully) and the tire would be just fine. :thumb:

There is a black sidewall version, at least on some widths. I have a couple of the 700Cx28's in all black. Wire bead only, though, AFAIK.

dang, you're too late. My brother got me a Ribmo 700x25 for $26. Plus, I also found that Soma uses panaracer to make their tires and come in all black.

I had this problem with Specialized tires, but it didn't seem to affect performance, the tires lasted until the tread wore away.

I had been using Schwalbe Kojaks on my folder, and these developed numerous cracks all around the sidewalls, but the tires also lasted until the tread wore away, with no punctures at all in a year of city riding. I recently changed to Panasonic Minits tires, so far they are holding up quite well. They roll better than the Kojaks, and are a bit lighter.

How often do you inflate that tire and to what pressure?
The thread cross hatching lines in the sidewall are usually caused by running too low psi; thus the sidewall flexes too much and the threads start to show through....

During the time the cracks developed I was running just below the max pressure on the side - so probably 85-90psi. Off the top of my head I think the max pressure is 95. Anyway, rereading your post, it seems you're referring to something different...those "crosshatch" lines are visible in ThermionicScott's picture as well so I'm not sure what that's all about.

Having seen ThermionicScott's picture it does look to be the bead layer.
