Hi all

Apologies in advance for my blatant amateurism. could anybody help me out?

I have been attempting to fix up a Holdsworth Championship road bike circa 1978 that has been hanging in the attic for at least 25 years. I removed the chainrings from the sugino maxy crankset to clean off some oxide, but, when I came to bolting them back on, they just don't seem to to want to fix on tightly and they can be knocked off again very easily. They seemed fine before I took them off!

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be, assuming they aren't supposed to be like that?

Looks like the heads of the bolts are smaller than the holes. Possibly the result of rounding off. Maybe a larger washer under the heads is what's called for. Likewise on the back of the flange nut on the inner. Note that the inner's holes may be counter-bored on one side. If so, that goes toward the frame, so the flange nut's head pockets into it.

The correct sequence is flange nut, inner ring (recessed side to the head), crank arm, outer, washer, bolt. BTW- where's the 3rd flange nut. You absolutely need 3 to hold it on.

Thank you - you have solved my problem. a case of not paying attention to the detail on my part. i was indeed attempting to place parts on the wrong way. I have the flange nut for some reason not in the shot though! Thanks again. :)
