I had a wreck on the SS last Sunday and will not be able to ride for a while. Went over the bars and ended up with a swollen left hip, road rash, a slight bump to the head and last but not least 3 broken ribs. The ribs are really setting me back because I can barely move at all without my ribs shifting. driving me nuts having to sit at home and not ride.
You don't realize how much you love something until you can't do it for some reason or another.

do you still have all of your teeth?

also, ribs heal really fast, chin up.

Luckily I still have all of my teeth. Glad to hear that ribs heal quickly.
The only bone that I have ever broken before this is my little toe, so I think that I was due.

Until they heal they are really painful though.

teeth are what matter.

Ribs are about 4-6 weeks, the one that I fractured took 5.

Don't ever break your foot. I had a cast on for like 14 weeks.

Worst part is trying to find a position to sleep in that doesn't make you want to rip your eyes out.

I feel your pain, literally and mentally. Got doored a month ago and have a stretched rotator cuff. Miss riding my bike everywhere, now i have to either take public transportation or walk. Building a new SS to keep me from going crazy but when im done i hope i'm ready to ride.

Trying not to laugh for 6 weeks was horrible. The ensuing pain was even worse.

To the OP, heal up, feel better. Even though you will want to ride, don't start before you get the ok from the doc, nothing worse than re-injuring yourself.

I think that I will start riding my 3 speed cruiser for a bit before I transition back over to the SS. Much more relaxed and i have a tendency to ride the 3 speed at a lot more casual pace. Going to the doctor Wednesday and going to find out when he thinks I will be good to ride.

+1 I broke my Talus rockclimbing and was in a cast for 14 weeks and 2 months of rehab. Sucked.

For the kind of pain caused by broken ribs, the best painkiller is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diclofenac

Otherwise, it's quite crap as a generic painkiller, but for muscle strain and broken (or cracked) ribs, it's extremely efficient. So efficient one pill will keep you pain-free for 24 hours.

I guess your doc has already prescribed them to you?

The doctor prescribed Vicodin and they sometimes make me nauseas.
Just about done with the prescription and then I will just take ibuprofen when needed.

just make sure you stay "regular"... Vicodin can stop you up real good.

sorry to hear about your spill, mate. hope you have a decently speedy recovery. did your bike survive?

Yep, already experienced a little bit of that.

The bike just had a few scratches and I had to adjust the handlebar position, after. The wheel was pointed straight ahead and the handlebar was to the right.

For your kind of injury, Diclofenac would be much better. It's non-addictive, it's not a generic painkiller, and it's super-effective for your kind of injury. You would need to take a lot of ibuprofen to achieve the same effect as Diclofenac.
When I broke my arm and cracked my ribs, one pill (50 mg) of Voltaren (trade name for Diclofenac in Finland) would keep me pain-free for 24 hours, though I was supposed to take one every 12 hours.
