General Cycling Discussion - Carbon Wheels, but which are best???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi,

I have a Cannondale Bad Boy that I use for road and cyclocross/XC riding and I'm getting pretty sick of swapping the slick tires for the cyclocross tires and back and back and back and .....

So I want to buy a new set of wheels, but what to choose.

Carbon road wheels (Cheap):

Carbon Cyclocross wheels (Still not very expensive):

What would you do?

And would it be possible to mount a Shimano 105 cassette on a Deore Hub and SLX Derailleur?
Gear ratios from a 105 would be better for road use then the deore XT cassette I have on there now.

Posted in General forum because it's neither road nor cyclocross question.

In my case, neither.

First wheelset: Cheep + carbon + clincher = scary

Second wheelset: Cheep + carbon + tubular = somewhat less scary

In that price range I'd stick with alloy rims.

If you don't know, the odds are good you don't need them.

What would you do?

spare wheels aluminum rim.. brake pad wear to stop will be less expensive,
when you wear thru rim, which in CX, does not take long..

a couple sets of glued up race wheels, perhaps even a backup bike,
to finish, the race, when you break stuff..

Yup disc brakes are standard on a Cannondale Bad Boy
