Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Un-clipping on a Fixed Gear

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

On a Single Speed or Geared bike i usually unclip my left foot before the bike comes to a complete stop while coasting. Obviously you can't do that on a fixed gear. So how do you unclip? Seems like you have to come to a complete stop before un-clipping. I'm sure there are many techniques but for a beginner, what is the best way?

unclip one foot, about 20 feet before your intended place to stop, while pedaling with your other foot, then turn your wheel opposite to the unlcipped foot when you are coming to a stop, lean towards your unclipped foot, and stand. Then unclip your other foot.
you can still pedal with one leg while the other is clipped in
some people even do that on purpose sometimes!

Step 1- Bust skidz
Step 2- ?????
Step 3- Profit
I usually just unclip when it comes time to put my foot down.

There are some things you can just do without thinking too much about...like sleeping, eating, peeing, and procreating. Unclipping is one of those things. Just ride....it'll figure itself out fairly quickly.

Ducktapped my shoes to the pedals, for better retention. Can't unclip only take off the shoe.

Which is, BTW, an awesome bike.
Dismount Technique (http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html) http://sheldonbrown.com/oldeng24/y.gifou can dismount in the normal manner from a fixed-gear bicycle, but advanced fixed-gear riders might enjoy learning a special, very cool-looking dismount that can only be done from a fixed gear. Instead of getting off to the side of the bicycle, the fixed-gear rider can go straight off the back. This technique works best if you ride with clips and straps, but if you are really proficient in disengaging from clipless pedals, try it at your own risk.
As the bicycle slows to near walking speed, disengage your left foot, then wait for the right pedal to get to the bottom of its circle. As the right pedal starts to rise, straighten your right leg and let the motion of the pedal lift you up. Let go of the handlebars, let the saddle move forward between your legs, and put your left foot on the ground. As the bike goes ahead, grab it by the saddle.
It takes a bit of courage to try this, but it is actually very easy to do. It is also extremely impressive to watch. When executed properly, it is very smooth, and you can go from riding to walking in a single fluid motion, without ever coming to a stop.

Come to a stop and unclip while track-standing. Works for me, even using slotted cleats.

Duct-taped. Duck tapped sounds like you used a dead duck corpse to tap your shoes into the pedals. Grammar police out.

i slow down to the point that the cranks are level, i stand up and unclip one foot, and use the bikes momentum to keep me rolling and have my opposite foot 6 'oclock and put the first foot down, then unclip the other if im getting off
same thing with clip/straps
might be hard to understand in type but it was the way i just intuitively learned on my own

Please be more specific re: who is in each group. It's the only way we can know how to serve you better.

also, there are many disciplines of tap dancing. Should I just get mediocre at many of them? or specialize in one?

A lot of times I just slow down, unclip my left foot, and Flintstone stop with it. I have absolutely no class though, and stopped caring about the heels of my Shimano shoes because they're so old.

You'd probably be mediocre even if you specialized.

Go to the tap dancing forum and ask how to do it. Tap dancing is like stopping a bike, you can't figure it out on your own; you need the Internet to explain it.

"Hey guys, I need some help untying my tap shoes. Do I stop dancing before I untie, or after? Perhaps there is one fluid motion, where I can finish dancing, and untie my shoes at the same time? Thanks."

If nothing else, crashing tends to release clipless shoes from the pedals.

All the quick ankle work involved in tap-dancing might actually be good training for unclipping from a sw8 fixay.

It's Jimmie, not Jimmy.
