The US continues to make more goods than China, so yeah, there's lots of stuff made in the US. Not so much low margin consumer goods, but lots of other stuff.

Maxxis is a Taiwanese-based company, but they have facilities in Taiwan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Holland, Japan and Dubai. Kenda is also a Taiwanese company, with facilities in Taiwan, China and Vietnam.

Why? What difference does it make?

I have no idea, never experienced a tire that was made in the USA. *shrug* Just wanted to support hard working people here I guess.

I don't buy goods made in China if I can help it. I always check the labels of anything I buy, and I prefer to buy things which are made in countries where companies do not pay slave wages. In many cases this is simply not possible, like when buying Apple products.
As a side note, I live in Japan, and I often see many Chinese tourists here shopping in the electronics districts. Ironically, Chinese prefer not to buy Chinese either, and always choose goods which are made in Japan, Europe, or America. Perhaps they know something we don't.
Recently I bought a digital camera, and here in Tokyo I found only Lumix and Fuji cameras where locally made, everything else was made in China, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. I ended up buying the Fuji camera. The stores here put signs next to certain goods which say "made in Tokyo", or "Made in USA", and these are usually the most desirable items.

Carlisle tires makes lots of tires for small equipment and used to make some damn fine bicycle tires too!! However, the chinese took the bike tire business.

IIRC Continental and Schwalbe makes some of the upper-end road tires in Germany, but most of it is from Thailand.
I understand the desire for someone to "buy locally" (no matter where their "locality" is) but when it comes to bicycles, it's darn difficult to put together a complete bike that doesn't have at least some parts from the Pacific rim.
Many decades ago every American tire manufacturer made bicycle tires.

I think Coker still makes the 36" tires, occasionally. Just convert your bike to 36" wheels, and you'll be set!

The Taiwanese are the same way. There is a preference for Japanese brands. They feel that things from the Mainland are often suspect. Domestic products don't carry that stigma, but they are not thought to be a whole lot better.

Continental, Michelin, Vredstein and Hutchinson(sp?) all make tires in Europe.
As far as difficulty, the only thing I can't find for my MTB is a cassette, but that's not a problem for a road bike.

I'm curious what American bike tires would be like if they did make 'em here? Probably durable, but heavy and inefficient if history were any indication. ;)
