Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. My worst fear is a dooring. I wonder if even outside of the door zone I wouldn't swerve like Mr Townsend. Such a waste because someone chooses not to look.

Sad.
Why I ride well out into the lane, when there is no bike lane present, away from the many oblivious motorists entering or exiting their vehicles, and being predictable to motorists behind me.

Since one frequent poster here refers to the door zone as "Kryptonic", I guess Neill Townsend was a real Superman. RIP.
I hope there is at least one rider or traffic planner takes this death to heart and refuses to ride in the door zone or create infrastructure that encourages people to ride there.

RIP My heart goes out to his family.

I 'take the lane' specifically, not only to avoid being doored. But also to avoid what has happened to state police/highway patrol officers who have been killed while in the process of a traffic stop. Because a motorist drifted to the point of rear-ending the stopped vehicle or hitting the officer/patrolman.
Thanks to you guys on this forum I was savvy on dooring as of a few years ago. Obviously there are a lot of riders who have no idea because on my commute to/from work it is not uncommon for me to be overtaken on the inside (i.e. door zone). What annoys me is that if a door was opened, these clueless souls would swerve into me and drive me into the traffic.

Your welcome:thumb:
While I make a regular practice of it, to never ride in the door zone, I can say the same for the forum. Because of the number of motorists' I have seen pulling out of mini/strip mall parking lots, into traffic and not paying attention. I am now even more aware thanks to forum, in watching out for motorists' not paying attention in that situation.
