View Full Version : Poll: Did Oscar Whimp Out?
OK, So I watched the Oscar nominations this morning as I was getting dressed. And I was shocked when Fahrenheit 9/11 didn't get a nod for best picture. I figured that supposedly "liberal" Hollywood would have it in there, not necessarily to win, but to place or show. I also noticed that the Passion did not get a nomination either. Now does it seem that the Academy took the easy way out by not nominating either one for best picture. Do both the Liberal Left and the Chirstian Right both feel they got slighted?
For the record I saw the Passion, and thought it was very good movie. I think that it is deserving of the nods for cinematography, make-up, and score.
I have not seen Fahrenheit 9/11, and cannot comment on it from a stand-point of deservedness. I can only say that from all the press it got, I thought it would get a nomination if just to improve TV ratings.
I can't wait to hear Chris Rock's Michal Moore jokes.

Movies that win "Best Picture" tend to be entertaining, and to have made some money (the voters are in the entertainment business, so they value both "entertainment" and "money".
So, how are films about Jesus being tortured and abused by a self-serving politician and America being tortured and abused by a self-serving politician "entertaining"?

Actually the Passion is #3 for 2004, and Fahrenheit 9/11 was #17. I would say that they made money. I found Spiderman 2 entertaining, and it finished #2 in money. No Oscar noms though. My vote is actually the one that states that Oscar held his ground and didn't bow to media/public pressure. I just threw it out there as a question. Maybe I should have posted under Rel/Pol forum.
No they were not slighted. Neither were in Oscar class.
Look at the nominees, no comparisson.
I'm sorry, but just because Mel Gibson made a religious movie doesn't
make in Oscar Worthy.
Fahreneheit 9/11? I found nothing particularly redeeming about
it from a cinematic viewpoint. interesting? maybe. Oscar? Hardly.
People need to get a life. Just because your particular favourite
movie (whatever your religious/political persuasion) didn't get a nod
from Oscar doesn't mean its an insult.

BAH. I can't believe "Prisoner of Azkaban" didn't get a nomination for best picture. What is this country coming to! I have seen it six times and it gets better every time.

Skipped watching the Globes this year and will skip the Oscars too. No longer interested in Hollywood's opinion about anything, especially itself.

Over the years, the Oscar voters have made some wildly wrong choices for "Best Picture". But, I am seldom disappointed with the choices for "actor" and "actress". Only "card carrying" actors vote in those categories, and they have a good eye for outstanding performances.
I've made it a habit each year to rent every movie that has a nomination in the "Best Actor/Actress" and "Best Supporting Actor/Actress". No matter what the merits of the movie as a whole, the nominated performances are always well worth the price of the rental.
The two actors who really knocked me out this year are Jamie Fox and Hillary Swank. If they don't win...grrr

That was a good movie. Every time I watch one of those movies, I think:
"Now Hermione's 2 years closer to 18."
I know I'm going to Hell.

I'm disappointed that Fahrenheit 9/11 wasn't in there. It was an excellent film. As for The Passion, I never saw it, probably never will.

Tell Hermione to give her Time Turner a few twists and you are all set.

I thought both movies were good, but neither one was good enough for "Best Picture", unless Farenheit would have entered in the Documentary category.
