Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - H+S or Velocity?

So I want to build a new bike. It's going to be a univega road frame converted to fixed. It'll be running 42/17. I'm wondering if I should get H+S f30 or Velocity Deep Vs? Or anything else? I want the rims to be deeper than 25 and shallower than 40. Don't care much about spoke count as long as they're strong and light wheels.

Deep Vs and F30s are by no means light rims. What's your intended purpose for these? Are the roads you ride crappy and necesitate bombproof wheels or could you shed some weight and go for lighter rims?

KinLins are out, then. Those are only good on bikes with 70+ gear inches.

generally speaking deep section and light do not go together in the world of rims. more material = more weight

I don't mean b43 deep, just deeper than 25. What's the deal with these kinlins? Are they decent?

Substantially lighter than most rims at that depth.

Try to read some legitimate information about bicycle wheels, and then realize the minimal effect that rim depth actually has.

It's not very likely Scrodzilla would sell something he thinks is junk. Various people on here have KinLin's. I'd say you're more than fine.

So, I htink it's between Mich Pistard and the KinLins. Now the question is hubs. I want high end hubs. I want hubs that will not fail. Philwood quality, maybe even philwoods. I don't want anything thats going to get dirt inside, or can't stand riding in rain. I've heard Paul, Chub, and Philwoods are the best. But I want some forum word. Thanks!

Miche Pistard are really heavy, and anything you build with phils are going to be boat anchors as well.

KinLin XR-300's, sapim lasers, Novatec track hubs.

Great quality hubs, sealed bearings, also one of the lightest track hubsets available. Wheelset would be in the ballpark of 1600g, and extremely cost effective.

That was just throwing out a number, just did the math and it comes out 1706g:
(4.36*64(spokes)) + (.9*64(nipples)) + (.15*64(veloplugs)) + (465*2(XR-300)) + 168(front hub) + 262(rear hub) = 1706g complete.

This is just based on manufacturers advertised weights, which are probably ±5-10%.

Just threw it all in my cart at RG. came out to $317.70 shipped in the US. Add about 45 bucks per wheel if you want them built.

So about $400, or the price of Phil Wood hubs... haha.

Also, that above price is using black spokes and nipples, which are a little bit more expensive.

Using silver brings the cost down to $298.50 shipped. Again, add about 90 bucks for build cost.

This is a cheap ass wheel set. damn! I'll be building them with a buddy of mine who works at the LBS. Thanks for the word Nagrom_, you probably just saved me 200 bucks and a pund or two.

You know if you go with a good box style rim and a good hub, you could probably save even more weight.
