General Cycling Discussion - commuter bike project before and after

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I started off with a panasonic dx1000 (I think 84? not sure the year. mid 80s though) that I got off craigslist for $20 or $30.
Basically I disassembled the whole thing, stripped the frame and forks to bare metal, and painted them. 2 coats primer, 3 coats gold, 4 coats black, white pinstriping tape, 2 coats clear. (not bad for rattle can paint job if I do say so myself.)
It used to have 27 1/4 wheels which I changed over to 700x23c with a flip flop hub. wrapped up the bars with fizik tape, and put on a new seat post, but used the saddle off my felt f85. running a 1/8 half link chain, with 52/16 fixed gear (16t freewheel on other side) I wanted to go down to a 46t crank, but I couldn't find any for cheap that were decent quality.
Also put on some double sided wellgo pedals. platform on one side, spd on the other.

I'm just gonna use this as a commuter around town, and maybe for a little training to round out my stroke with the fixed gear.

Well my gym has spd pedals on the spin bikes, so if I ever ride this to the gym, I can wear my cycling shoes. But if I'm just riding around town like to a grocery store or something, I can just wear regular shoes.
