General Cycling Discussion - How to carry road pump without it getting too dirty

I just got a Topeak road pump and am trying to figure out the best way/position to mount its bracket so it will not get too much dirt. I have screw holes under the lower down tube, but that's the easiest to get dirty from the mud, dirty water on the streets... I don't have a top tube (it's a step through). I'm considering two alternatives: either wrap the pump in a plastic bag if mounted under the lower down tube--but the bracket will still get dirty over time; or to mount the bracket on the upper down tube next to the bottle cage.

I am interested in any better ideas about where/how you mount your road pump (keep in mind mine is a step through without the horizontal top tube). I hate to get the bracket and pump so dirty that it's hard to clean over time.

I've seen some mounted next to bottle on either down tube or seatpost. You can also hook and loop under the handlebar or seatstays. Or you can put it in your jersey pocket.

I carry mine in my shopping pannier or a backpack.

mine goes in my rear rack trunk. especially good idea if you are a year round commuter cuz the trunk gets a waterproof covering

Every topeak pump that I've paid any attention to came with a bracket for mounting the pump next to a bottle cage. That's what I would do.

Topeak has varied the mount that comes with the pump over the years, but if it works, try putting in on the front of the left seat stay.

Maybe a section of inner-tube as a cover? or Sew a bag to put the pump into.

Most of these are intended for recumbents, but a frame bag can be mounted on most DF frames too. Just call and ask if they will mount on whatever diameter tube you might want.

Done this more than once. Excellent results, and easy if you have access to multiple width tubes.

try wraping it in a layer of "saran wrap" or similar poly film .
i keep mine in a tube shaped seat bag, size is about 12" long x 3" diameter,
plus room for a tube, lever, tool, patches, etc

+1 thats exactly how I do it, never had an issue or even concern about it getting dirty. I do like the old inner tube sleeve idea though

Can't see very well how you screw it on the tube next to the bottle cage. This Topeak Morph G's bracket can't be installed in the same holes as the bottle cage together with the bottle cage (unlike some other frame pumps, and unlike what Retro Grouch said). Where do you screw it on?

Edit: just saw yours is not Topeak but Lezyne---maybe you have a bracket that can be screwed next to the bottle cage.

Personally I use a backpack for mine. I also carry a few pounds of tools, spare tube, spare fuel, etc.

But the pump also has the bracket on it, which would be unnecessary if that black velcro tape is the only thing holding it to the tube. It seems the bracket was screwed under the bottle cage bracket, and the parts holding the pump are on the side of the screws (rather than over the screws).

The bracket has two claws on it and the velcro hold it pinned against the claws.

Piffel...It was your subdued jersey that allowed you to creep up on me. But to the subject I have seen people mount a Topeak Road Morph in the same place but they used zip ties to mount it a bit higher than the Lezyne. I mount mine next to the front watter bottle cage. I have seen Road Morphs under the top tube with zip ties and on top of the top tube with zip ties. But my Lezyne or my Second Wind both mount with the same kind of bracket that mounts behind the cage bracket. My Specialized air tool mounts the same way and is as big as a Road Morph.

The mounting bracket that comes with the Topeak Morph pumps is designed to install in place of a bottle cage, not alongside one. But it can also be fastened to just about any part of the frame using nylon zip ties. You can strap it to your top tube, seat tube, or possibly even a chain stay or seat stay. (I tried a stay, but got nervous about the pump winding up in my spokes.)

Topeak does makes a mounting bracket that can be nestled alongside a bottle cage, similar to the Lezyne one pictured above. Thanks for the link. Including shipping, it costs 1/3 of the pump itself, and when putting one in the "cart", got message "This product is not available in the requested quantity." :crash: They should offer an option between centerlined and this one to be included with the pump sale package.

When I rode the GAP Trail last year, it rained two of the three days. I had my Road Morph G mounted on the downtube next to the water bottle cage using the Topeak accessory that Skydog 75 cited. When I got home, I realized that the interior of the pump was contaminated with crushed limestone chips and water from the ride, the amount of which was truly surprising to me. It would have ruined the seals in short order if I hadn't caught it. I like where Mr. Beanz mounted his pump on the seat tube. I'll have to give that a try.

I think anywhere on the bike it will get dirty, especially on the downtube just behind the front wheel. Maybe less if you have a fender.

You wanna keep it clean?

Tie a string around it and drop it down the seat tube.

Bracket-schmucket! All pumps have outer diameter of 1". Even frame pumps. If you have a dead Serfas product or some k-rap from Hellmart, keep the offset bracket and strap your Topeak to it. That's what I did with my Roadmorph - reused old bracket.

Now, frame pump in an offset bracket - that's a scary thought.

Done this more than once. Excellent results, and easy if you have access to multiple width tubes. Exactly what I do. I used an approx 1-inch wide piece of a mtb tube (like a rubberband and it covers the inflator head nicely. I mounted my Topeak with the included bottlecage mount. I have the handle on the "up" end, in case the handle's locking clicker comes undone it won't extend as it's against gravity, also helps keep stuff out of the handle mech.
