Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - it starts out as a simple task...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

it starts out like this: i'll just clean my bike, wipe it down a little, clean and lube the chain, some basic stuff.
but y'know, those nice campy cranks really shouldn't be on that shimano bb, they'll get ruined. i'll just run to the lbs and get a cheapie campy bb. oh yeah, and a campy bb lockring wrench since i don't have one of those.
install the bb, feel much better.
but wait! i should throw that campy chainring on in place of the sugino that's on there right now.
good idea, that's much nicer.
doh! it's a smaller chainring than i had, so i need a smaller cog, go to sheldonbrown.com and figure out how many inches i was pushing, decide i wanna push a bigger gear, figure out what size cog i need, and zip back to lbs.
which doesn't have the right size cog.
call around, find another lbs that has the right size cog, ride over there, buy two cogs; the one i wanted and one that's a tooth smaller 'cause hey, you never know, i might be able to rock that...
and so it goes. does this happen to anybody else?

i'm trying to live the "simple" life now. be happy with my road conversaion. no lusting after better cranks, hubs, frames. take care of what i have and all will be fine, and i'll be happier. to each his/her own, but i've got to find some balance.

I need to show this to my wife. She thinks I'm the only one who does this. I'm just as bad with computers. darn the expensive hobbies.
yeah I'm tryna stay away from the intarweb, that's some bad stuff right there when ya get to orderin..
I also have this habit of making up reasons to go down to the bike shop(s)...
...in fact, I'm grateful that I won't be staying at my apt. tonight. I would only end up fiddling around with the frame and various parts lying (literally) around the studio and devising schemes & plans within plans, and hitting bike websites in the never ending search for ____ ?

I'm proud of myself. I actually managed to stop by the bike shop last night and leave without buying anything. I went in with the intent to simply check out some pricing on a rim and set of spokes and almost left with two rims and 64 spokes.
I just kept reminding myself about how unhappy the wife would be.
$200 in parts and tools just a few weeks ago. Then $40 on Tuesday for a hub. $50 yesterday in dues.
Breath deeply. Breath.

Fortunately I am a member of the bike co-op so my bike dreams never cost much. Which is a good thing because I invest all my money in technology...specifically the Centipede machine at the laundry-mat.
Enjoy

It was with that kind of thinking that I went from one mtb a few years ago to that same mtb with much nicer parts now, a road bike, but the wheels sucked, hey.. a chopper would be a fun project, ss mtb, oooooohh fixed gear, I need another fixie for around town, so as not to bang up the nice one.. wow... this parts box is getting pretty full.... it happens. After rent and other bills come the bikes.

Well, I've been good lately. No recent fixie project. The Schwinn Madison track frame I found on Ebay many many months ago is still hanging off of my garage rafter.....begging for me to build her up. She's gonna have to wait until I'm mentally ready.
But on the other hand, I have a Miche ring on my Superbe Pro track cranks....and that mismatch always bugged the hell outa me. I need to start looking for the 'proper' ring.

But they've already said thier names. Too late.
Here's one for you.
I went to a bike shop. I needed a hat.
I came out with...
a hat.
It is possible. Just be poor. Or pretend to be poor. Or use common sense...
Of course, I'm the guy who gets parts and can't do anything else until they are on...
hah! just the same. I wanted to replace a worn road chainring with a proper
track ring and also reduce the size from 53 to 48. with the new chainring/sprocket
combination I couldnt get the chain lenght right. It was either too long or too short
for the horiz. dropouts. So I had to get a smaller sprocket and a new chain because
I chopped the old one into pieces when trying to get the lenght right. With the new
combination I got the chainlenght right but now the wheel was too close to the
seattube so I had to get a new 23c tire instead of the 28c. argh!
oh yeah..and by going from 53x17 to 48x16 I lowerd the gearing by just 3 gearinches...
atleast the new ring is quieter

i think that's all of us. i didn't eat until 4 pm a couple of days ago when i got my new wheelset.
On Saturday I woke up a little glazed over from the previous night's activities and instead of going right for the coffee, as I usually do, I spent 45 min tensioning the wheel I had laced the night before (first wheel build) and then made coffee. While drinking the coffee I laced and tensioned the other wheel and didn't eat anything until after I got the test ride in.
you're all my kind of nerds. I've forgotten to eat a number of times due to new bike parts or a bike project.

I spent over 500 on my road conversion, but seriously, everything had to be either blue or silver, and that $100 stainless Tange fork was to nice to pass up!
