Well, I did it (100k MS Ride) !! Made it to the end and felt like I had accomplished something. A month or so ago, a 5 mile ride was exhausting so it's good to see some progression.
My wife did great but she does that "spin" class a couple times a week which must help. I probably should have done the 50k since I'd only been riding for a month but none-the-less, I did it. First part of the ride was hilly, then it got hilly with a head wind, then relatively flat with a strong head wind (couldn't get 10 MPH). Experienced riders said it was a pretty difficult ride due to the wind.
I was totally spent around mile 55 :( : sick of fighting the wind; sick of the pain in my ass bones from the seat; sick of fighting with myself to keep pedalling. Not to sound like a sissy but for some odd reason, around mile 55, I felt as if I would cry at any moment. I think I was just totally spent mentally and physically but kept going anyway and got through it. Has this every happened to anyone else?

Ahh, the mental part. When I attempted my first and only century, the group I was riding in dropped me at mile 65. I lost it mentally thinking that I wasn't a good rider and would not be able to make it back to the cars. I really struggled to mile 75. The registration area was at mile 75 so I just quit instead of doing the last 25.

I did a 50-mile ultra-marathon back in December. The entire run, I focused on positive things. When I hit the 25 mile mark, I was only 10 minutes behind my friends that were running it as a relay! With each water station, I would joke with the helpers a little and then be on my way. I'd look at the scenery and think of how nice the weather was. I'd talk and joke a little with the other runners. When I finished the race (8hrs. 35 mins.), I was still in a good mood, making jokes (bad ones), and running well.

The moral is: keep a positive attitude throughout the entire event. That positive attitude will get you through ANYTHING!

I like to think of it as: negative thoughts drain energy, positive thoughts MAKE energy!

If you want more examples/stories of past events, email me and I will send them to you. I've got several more I could tell that fit this topic.
