Do you think it's possible to take a cruiser style bike like this http://www.nirve.com/largeimage.asp?id=1965 and put BMX styled handlebars on it? Would it still be rideable? Dumb idea?

absolutely. People have been doing it with vintage 26" cruisers for years

just do a search for "klunkers" or "klunker bikes" and you'll see all you want.

I've set up my mountain bike with BMX handlebars, the hardest part was getting a 22.2 BMX stem. With cruisers it may or may not be easier, the older ones take the same .883 stem quill diameter most BMX stems have, the newer *mart cruisers take the 22.2 quill, and threadless forks take threadless BMX stems.

You pretty much have the stem/handlebar set up I am looking for! I have a mountain bike I would like to set up with ape bars or possibly the bars you have. Can you give me some details?
