Man falls of Segway, injures knee (http://www.accessatlanta.com/ajc/metro/0502/03segway.html).

Erm, I've taken *much* worse spills; on my bike, when studiying martial arts, when playing a friendly game of volleyball on the tarmac. Most everyone in here has likely eaten pavement much harder than this git, and I'll lay odds that he'll file suit against the Segway corporation for his "grievous, debilitating injury"

I mean, the *hospital*? For falling off a *scooter*?

Some people...

if you look at the picture, it is almost like he is smiling at some thing. . . .

I dunno, i've been on a scooter and they are now that hard to control!! when i did fall once, it was nothing as bad as when i fell in to a dead bush with my bike. :)

I (and, I am sure, Dean Kamen!) would like to know what the rider was attempting to do. I strongly suspect he got one wheel up on the curb or misjudged the curb cut. The dynamic stabilization system works only in the fore-aft direction. Kamen has never claimed that riding a Segway makes one invincible or untippable.

Build an idiot-proof machine and nature will build a better idiot.

Keep in mind people, it is one of those new "fancy segway" scooters...Bu||sh|t if you ask me. Another way for people to not excercise at all and use a motorized cart to get their lazy asses around.

yknow they sell those segways for like 10 grand? gawd...I'm glad the guy fell off, i hate those things. <cough lawsuit achem>

I agree. Segways do have some advantage, for the elderly and handicapped, but not for a perfectly capable human being. Then again, this from the nation where the average twenty-five year adult can't bike ten miles without having a few weeks to train for it.

Yeah i agree that they can help the handicap or elderly, but it seems they're marketed more towards buisnessmen...did you remeber when CNN showed it off the day it came out? ...man, what a joke. We have cars to get from point A to point B. Cant we use our legs to get from point B to point B.1 <B.1 BEING AISLE 5 OF THE GROCERY STORE - JeeZ!>

I didnt say this before but i find it utterly HILARIOUS this guy on the ground next to the segway...hahaha...funny as hell that he fell. Keep in mind these were "extremely safe and sturdy". I LAUGH AT HIS SEGWAY MISERY!

The Segway is a vehicle and a vehicle can be "crashed." So what else is new?

I'm sure it's more a case of human error than machine malfunction or flaw. After all, it took me a while to learn to ride my bike, drive my car and even walk, for that matter.

Any publicty is good publicity.

After this news, the 5 people remaining in the world that didn't know what the hell the Segway was now do.

As an engineer-to-be I am interested in the technology, but as I biker I'm not so sure about it's practicality.

It's smaller than a bike, but quite a bit heavier.
And I'd like to see the power drain on the thing when it hits constant steep hills. It must be fun being the guy dragging that 80 lbs? thing up hill after it has ran out of juice half way through.

Isn't this why they invented electric wheelchairs or those little electric buggies I see elderly people zipping around on. I think these buggies are cheaper than the Segway anyhow. I was riding on a bike path and up ahead was a lady on an electric buggy making her way up a 8% incline, she managed to hold ~16kph/10mph up the hill. It took me a while to catch her, she was really moving.

Actually the Segway would be useless for the elderly or handicapped as it needs the operator to stand to use it, these people would probably have some difficulty using it.

Another invention to file under the category of : why build it? because we can.

CHEERS.

I agree. These Segway's will accelerate the fattening of America. It's nuts, I can almost see the next headline....

Road Rage on the Sidewalks....Segway involved in hit and scoot accident with a child bicyclist....

As I think about it, I'd much rather
ride my bike in a city populated by people
riding segways, than the same city with
people driving SUVs.
They weren't designed as anything but an alternate
form of transportation, and one that doesn't pollute.
No, the people who use em won't be fit, (unless they
drag em around that 8% grade  ) but that was
never the intention.
hell, I'll take 25 to 30 wankers on segways
over 1 exhaust belching bus trying to squeeze me
into the curb anyday.
just my $.02 worth

How much do you wanna bet this happened right after the words "Watch this!" were muttered?
