My brother just graduated from law school (a top 10 place) and has a job working for a Federal Judge starting next week. He would like to get some kind of bag so I thought I'd get him one as a graduation/birthday gift. I know he doesn't like backpacks and that's probably too informal. Although briefcases would probably be a safe choice and look decent, I think that sort of thing he finds way too formal for his style. He dresses really, really well and could probably model if he wanted to, but he's just not into briefcases.
What's a good intermediate type of thing for carrying around papers and such?

Have you considered a gift certificate? I have a feeling the a briefcase for a lawyer is a fairly personal choice.

Yeah, you are probably right. What kinds of stores have a nice range of stuff?

CHeck out Custom Hide. They have some very nice leather briefcases.
Most law graduates are already given a large bag of dirty tricks to carry around:)

What does he need to carry in the bag? Laptop?
I use something similar to this for work, but I have to drag the laptop with me on business trips http://www.briefcase.com/McKlein-Walton-8398-17-Expandable-Dual-Compartment-p/mc-8398.htm

I would use a laptop case myself, haven't even seen a briefcase in a long time. I do have a decent case for my 17 inch laptop, and it has room for a lot more in it. They are really handy. Straightforward and simple, doesn't have to be designed by Pierre Cardin.
Even if he doesn't have a laptop, it is still great for paper work, books, etc.
