Mountain Biking - How to get this thing back into shape...

I just bought a 2002 Giant Yukon for $60. It's in good shape other than a derailer hanger twisted in a crash and a stuck Judy TT fork.

Does anyone know a good way to get a new hanger? EDIT: LBS doesn't sell them for Giant bikes, Giant doesn't have them on their website.

How about that fork? I haven't tried to put a ton of force on it yet, but it's stuck good and solid. There are caps to pry off, can I yank those off and add some oil? I've never worked on a suspension fork before, so any advice is appreciated.

Any Giant dealer should have the hangers. As for the fork, take it to said Giant dealer and ask their advice.

Heh, well I've already got a fixed gear bike. I kind of want to use this thing to try out mountain biking, maybe it's not worth it?

Oh, it's aluminum with a replaceable hanger. I wouldn't have bought it if the frame were trashed. I'd really like to get this fork bouncin' again if I can...

Just buy a hanger from an LBS and set it up geared. Its a fine xc frame to work with :)

talked to a mechanic friend of mine, and he said the same thing. is the fork compressed in all the way, if do then trying to get it unstuckmight cause gouging of the stanchions, in which case you WILL need a new fork. I've got an aold threadless GT rigid for that I'll let go for REAL cheap if you want it.

Hey, actually the fork appears to be totally UNcompressed (or nearly so). Any tips for that situation? I am tempted to just soak the stanchions in oil, but maybe there is a specific oil I should use?

In that case, I'd try to disassemble the fork, clean all the parts, lube it, and reassemble. Not difficult. If it's uncompressed, there's going to be minimal spring tension, so it's not dangerous to unscrew the top caps. The Rock Shox website has service manuals for the 2002 Judys.

Sorry to resurrect this thread... I disassembled the fork to the extent that I can, removed the top caps, the spring in the left leg. The upper and lower legs seem to be practically fused together so that I can't slide them relative to one another at ALL. I don't quite understand what the interface between them is like. If anybody knows how to loosen them up, please let me know.

Maybe you could just go off a big drop and land on the fork really hard, and hope it loosens?

Get some pentrating oil or a solvent like PB Blaster or WD-40.

Spray the outside of the stanctions (shiny slidy thingy) between the stanction and the lower assembly.

Spray, let it soak, spray more, let it soak...etc. All weekend long if you have to.

Spraying the inside where the springs are won't do much.
