Alt Bike Culture - Enormous cruiser

I was riding home yesterday from the store, and I saw this enormous, bright red cruiser with what must have been 36" wheels. Honestly, I've never seen wheels that tall except on the old high wheel bikes. The front chainring looked like it couldn't have been more than about 20 teeth, which with wheels that big would make sense. I didn't get a good look at the crank, but I imagine the guy probably had cranks arms about a foot long to be able to put enough torque to those wheels to climb up anything other than a steep downhill descent. It was kind of cool looking, but I had to wonder how difficult it would be to ride something like that on a regular basis. The guy probably just rides it for fun on nice days, so he probably doesn't care.

Holy smokes! Tech specs say it has a 40 INCH standover height! The pics don't do it justice as they don't show anyone ridong it for scale perspective. The only indication on how huge it is is the apparent size of the crank set.

i've been wanting one of those, but they don't pop up very often, and never for very cheap. wal mart's been selling a 32" wheel bike for a bit though. still takes some looking, but new they're only about $200. the couple of people i've read about having one seem to like them. i want one, or at least the wheels for some kind of big wheel stretch.

There's a guy in my area with one of those 36"-wheeled monster cruisers. It's a fun machine, the gearing was pretty low. The guy even rode it on Ragbrai this year, but there were hills he needed to get off and walk.

I saw that guy with one of those Coker 36" highwheelers the other day. At first I thought it was a recumbent from the posture, then I noticed the big wheel. :thumb:

here's where someone used the wheels for a stretch cruiser. i want to try this so bad, but i'll probaly have to find one of the 32" walmart bikes instead
